Not sure whats best. Just looking to get into electric bass, I play cello now, so shouldent be too hard.
Will be using a cabinet I have on hand with a JBL 2226h and a yamaha pa amp/mixer.

I'd go for the Squier in this case

However talkbass is a good place to learn something about basses (you'll have to learn how to do the setup etc)

I've just noticed that they're all active. Have you already searched for something like a Squier Jazz or something like that?

How does active vs passive matter?

Thats the only squier I found under $200

Active pickups/electronics have higher output and require a battery. Active basses usually lack tone control, which is usually replaced with an onboard EQ. In this case, the Jaguar has a bass boost only, which would probably have a similar effect to tone control (but I'm not 100% sure, since they're achieved in very different ways and I've never tried that bass)

P+J pickup configurations (like the one on that Squier) are usually very versatile and I'd choose the Jaguar for that kind of music. However, don't expect very good wood or stuff like that (that Squier has a 5 pieces body as far as I can see, and the other ones won't be much better)

Take a look at some video reviews on those basses, but remember that a good part of the tone comes from your hands.

Example:

Sound pretty good for the price, if you ask me. It only has 20 frets, so if you plan to move to something like metal or jazz/fusion solos in can somehow limit your range.

The other one is 24 frets. Does that matter that much?

And you are pretty sure the fender is the best option?

Unless you want to look on the Rochester Craigslist for something better under $200.

It mostly matters in solo situations, if you like to go higher. Most songs don't go higher than the 17th fret on the G string (high C)

I'd get the Squier for a more classic rock tone, even if you can also span a lot of genres with that pickup configration and onboard EQ. Funk tones, slap ones, good pick tones and even Jaco style won't be a problem imho. Just make sure to care about the battery (don't leave the jack plugged in if you're not playing and change it about every 6 months),use decent strings and change them after a while; endurance varies from string to string models and personal preference.

I've taken a look on the rochester craigslist and I still think that the Squier is the best option, at least to my personal preference. Can you check it out before buying?

Moreover feel free to wait for opinions from other people if you want to be 100% sure

Check for any possible defect on the finish and play a bit with all the knobs to be sure there are no issues

Then buy it and have fun!

I will. Nice to learn new instrument. At Least I can already read the music. And I'm used to strings.

How often do you change strings on your cello?

Never really.

Unless they are visibly wearing out or the break when tuning.

I wonder what would happen if I put cello strings on a bass...

I don't think you can, which length scale are cello strings?

Bass strings may become dull after 1, 3, 6 or even 12 months, depending on the type, brand and model. The only strings which last a lot are flatwounds, but they're very mellow from the beginning. Watch some comparison videos between flatwound and roundwound to get a rough idea

As for string brands, I like DR, IQS, D'Addario. Many people also use strings from Rotosound, Warwick, Elixir, Fodera, La Bella, Thomastik-Infeld... there are lots of companies in this market. However I would avoid Ernie Ball strings unless you can afford changing them every 2 months lol

edit: just checked. You can't put cello strings on bass, since cello has almost 7" shorter scale.

Ok, I hope bass strings are cheaper than cello strings. A decent set of cello strings will set you back a few hundred $$.

US pricing for strings are very good, 4 strings sets are usually between 20 and 40$ each, depending on the model. There's a nice site with good prices and availability for bass strings, but I don't know if I can mention it. You know, it's online

There altro are some other places to buy bass stuff, also other accessories, not just strings

lol

p.s.: I don't know many US sites in this regard, since it would cost me more considering that I live in Italy

Just picked it up. Brand new. In box. Plastic coating still on pick guard. Beautiful. Could not play yet, had to go to work. But soon I'll play it. I tested it and it works, but didn't have time to tune.
