90% relative humidity - safe?

Is 90% relative humidity safe if you have your monitors and other electronic devices in the same room? Room temperature is usually between 25C - 30C (77F - 86F) if that has any saying.

Your devices probably specify the designed operating conditions, like 0 - 40 C, 0 - 90% humidity, non-condensing or something like that.  I'd check that first, but my gut tells me that's more than you should subject them to.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Nah, it's not to the point to where the walls are soaking wet, but they're kinda sticky to the touch if that makes any sense. The window is pretty foggy though.

there's a fair chance your electronics could die, dehumidify that room a bit

The real concern (aside from operating in high humidity itself) is the potential for condensation.  At those levels, it's very easy to have happen, for example if you bring new tech into the room that is a little colder than the air in the room already.

All of my PC stuff stays in the room 24/7, so that shouldn't be an issue then. Also, I checked the manual for my Acer Predator XB271HU monitor but it doesn't mention anything about maximum humidity levels.

That kind of humidity wouldn’t be good for long term exposure.

I live near the Texas coast and relative humidity here is always above 95% outside. I have not had any issues though. Just keep everything your windows and doors sealed. Maybe even buy a dehumidifier/air purifying fan if you are very concerned. You should be okay, assuming your machine is not in experiencing the full breadth of tropical climate.

I am not sure what the relative humidity is inside my house, but I run the AC around 77F upstairs and 78F downstairs, 24/7 during the summer. Never had any issues.

Even if the room itself just starts cooling off, it could start to form condensation on everything in it

Nah it's just my room. I recently bought a humidifier and really like the humid hot air. It's actually pretty relaxing once you get used to it.

Okay that is kind of sketchy. I would definitely invest in some form of isolating your room from the outdoor conditions. It would be much cheaper and cost effective to spend time sealing your doors and windows. I have a friend from college and something he did was he he wrapped his AC filter in paper towels to absorb some of the moisture while at the same time he purchases a serape external dehumidifier.

I would treat the humidity issue at the source, then worry about ambient temperature.

If you trap a certain amount of air and water in the room, just changing the temperature will still affect the "relative humidity"

You'd be much better off running a dehumidifier

Well theres your problem xD

Yeah humidity is something you get very used to, very quickly, its pretty crazy. Down here though it is not pleasant. During the summer you being to sweat as soon as you walk outside. If you’re not used to the area you will be soaked within minutes. It is like stepping outside into an infinite sauna. Don’t worry by christmas time it almost drops below 50F...

I used to live in Okinawa, Japan, which between the months of May and September, it routinely goes up to mid 80s with 80%+ humidity and probably peaks to 100% when the rain starts coming down.

I had a computer that lasted about 5+ years before it was decommissioned for being too old. It only needed a PSU replacement and something under the video card because the fan died. Otherwise the only visible damage was the case showed signs of rusting on the edges. Then again this was out by the ocean so the fact nothing in there rusted sooner is amazing.

So basically: yes, you'll be fine leaving a computer in a room with lots of humidity. Also you have the added benefit that ESDs are a lot harder to do.

Did you ever think of placing your electronics in an adjacent room which you have the humidity controlled? Be-as a closet with a fan controlled air intake passing thru rock salts and or a dehumidifier(maybe two) and an exhaust fan pushing air out could drop humidity out of the zone of having to ask if "90% relative humidity- safe?," zone.

If you have central air, you could look into a Dry Air Unit which reduces circulated humidity in ones house.
