Im looking to upgrade my possible failing router to something better. Currently I have a DIR 835 from Dlink. Is an N750 router. My issue is some times the 2.4Ghz radio fails and I have to restart the router. I would have upgraded the firmware but D Link hasnt released any since 2013. So Im pretty much on the last firmware I ever expect to get.

I have been looking at the TP Link Archer C7 or the C9.

The C7:

  • 2.4 Ghz up to 450Mbps
  • 5 Ghz up to 1300 Mpbs
  • Single Core CPU
  • Any where from 80-100 USD

The C9:

  • 2.4 Ghz up to 600Mbps
  • 5 Ghz up to 1300Mbps
  • Beamforming
  • 1Ghz Dual Core CPU
  • Any where from 126-150 USD

The big difference I see is the CPU and Beam forming. My desktop is hooked up wired. My laptop I suspect is an AC 1200 card, me and my sisters phones are AC capable. My mom's desktop is running a N900 TP Link wireless card. I dont think we will upgrade that right now. What I really want to know, if the dual core CPU going to make that much of a difference. Or if there are other recommendation people will have. I really dont want to spend more than $130-140USD. My sister has the C7 and it seems to have been rock solid. Her friend has the C9 only because thats what Best buy had at the time. So I havent really heard anything bad about either. Oh, Im rocking a 75/10 Comcast connection, however most of the time I can get 90/12 if that matters to any one. I just need something that will be rock solid and has some what good range. As my current router can do our house, which isnt really big.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

How about one of these instead? https://www.amazon.com/NETDUMA-Netduma-R1-Netduma-R1-Router/dp/B01DBISJLO

It's shinier. :D

How about no. Ive seen that one before. Any thing that has the word gaming in it. I will not buy. Generally means they are a substandard product. Plus thats way over my budget. Plus its not dual band or wireless AC.

Just saying, CPU is more bragging rights than anything. Consumer gateways usually have offloaded routing/packet processing, so CPU power is not very necessary. The only thing that might use I can think of would be for file sharing or services like dns or dhcp.

My native language is C++

Well I saw a post online that suggests that DDWRT might fix my issue. On top of it, its free. So I figure if I brick my router I can just go to best buy and get the C9 as its only a few dollars more than online. If I dont brick my router and it last a little longer than great.
