First Gaming Rig

Hi, I have never built a PC before I've always been a console guy but id like to get into the PC side of it.  I am looking to build a gaming PC that is capable of playing games at high quality but I'm hoping to keep it around 1000 or less, I think I have a decent set up but i need help figuring out a motherboard, case, and am open to changing the graphics card. 

 

Heres what I'm looking at

 

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor, going to put an Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

Motherboard: --

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory

Memory: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 4GB WINDFORCE 3X Video Card

Case: --

Power Supply: Corsair CSM 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Why get a 980 when you can get a 1060 or a 1070. At what resolution are you playing?

For the motherboard look for a B150/H170 board with 4 ram slots and decent reviews. For the case you can go with the S340 for instance.

I havent decided on one yet I wasn't sure what a good monitor to get would be

If you can afford the 1070 try a 1440p monitor.

yup, also look into the io, like a pci-e 3.0 4x M.2 slot for a future upgrade to an NVMe SSD

usb-c & usb 3.1 might also be handy features to look for
