Router advice (aus)

Crackhead1
Go to solution Solved by qwertywarrior,

why not asus: had two faulty mobos and a dead dvd drive from them. 3 strikes. unpopular view i know, but i take things like that rather personally.

ftp and samba dont ring any bells so i guess they are not important to me. unless ofc u think it is.

range: plenty off walls, split level 2 bedroom unit (brick walls n suspended slab).

thx again

complelty agree with you their motherboards suck

i got two motherboards in a row that had a faulty bios ( cold boot issue) wide spread throughout the forums

but their routers are solid . trust me on this i own many routers and bought many for friends including dlink linksys and asus

they all have gotten better over time but i believe asus is on top

small netbuilder reviews pretty much every router under the sun

i selected both N600 and N750 routers with wireless range (filter)

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/rankers/router/ranking/N750?rank=23

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/rankers/router/ranking/N600?rank=23

check the websites you want to buy from if they have these listed

need to replace the isp issued router.

i know little about networking and what makes a good router.

plz advise on a good router for use under the following guidelines

-budget prefer not to go over $100, will if have to tho

-main use is for home server, htpc and gaming

-will not buy asus

-wireless AC is not required

-easy to use( like port forwarding and such )

-prefer to purchase from MSY or PC case gear in Australia if possible

was looking at the n600 and n750 from tp link

 good format

why not asus ?

they are pretty much the top guys that offer a well made firmware for their routers

is ftp or samba important ?

how important is range for you ?

how big is your home ? many walls etc ?

i would also recommend to see if the routers u would select would work with DD-wrt or Tomato shibby if you would like to have more control of your network in the future

in terms of stability and performance (in my experience)   "Tomato by shibby" is faster and better over all

an example would be

using PPTP VPN  on a E2000 with DD-wrt only gave me 8Mbps while on tomato achieved 23Mbps  ( out of a 30Mbps connection)

the only downside would be that Tomato shibby focuses on only a number of routers while DD-wrt has a very long list

all my routers in my house have Tomato  a 3500L - e1200 - E1500

QoS is a dream to use on tomato and i love the graphs :)

ermagerd so many acronyms lol.

think i may take a bit more time to read up on these things uve mentioned before deciding on what to get.

didnt even know ppl where making 3rd party firmwares for routers.

found alot of comments below the article on DD-wrt that said the same thing. some nice bricking tales too.
