So i'm tryinh to help my cousin out with her old Macbook Late 2009 running OSX 10.8

 

before i took it home, she formatted the drive with the Disk utility, powered the Machine off and gave it to me

 

upon arriving home i power on the machine to find a white screen with a folder and a question mark on it

 

Holding command + r just white screens forever.  

 

holding C shows the recovery disk on screen and an arrow pointing to it, i click on the arrow and the system white screens endlessly. 

 

any help?

yes. to clear her files. but left the recovery partition

 

the partition with the OS was cleared

i have only ever done that with windows. how do i go about that on a mac?

where do i get a El capitan file? 

i dont exactly have another mac lying around

I had a similar issue on a more current mac- I deleted a windows partition off my mac and it screwed up the hard drive. I just took it into the Apple store and they reinstalled the OS and wiped the hard drive, as I suspected was necessary. It was free of charge so if you can't seem to fix it that may be your best option :/
