What causes GPU artifacting?

I know that when a GPU starts to artifact it is probably dead, but what has actually died on it?  When I reseated the heatsink off my really heavily artifacting 8800GT, it stopped artifacting, then I replaced the thermal compound and it started artifacting again (just not as badly)

My question is what has failed / failing in my graphics card, is it that the GPU has failed? a 20c capacitor or resistor has failed? or could it just be there is a short circuit somewhere? 

 

I am aware that an 8800GT isn't worth fixing, but I just want to know what the problem could be, whether it is fixable and if it could it translate to a valuable dead graphics card.

What thermal compound are you using?

Usually its either a bad GPU chip itself dying from torture, or more likely the VRAM is going bad. It is a dead card at this point with that.

Maybe it was conductive, buy Arctic MX-4 which is non conductive and maybe this will fix it
