I think it's just a matter of laymen not understanding what publishing a study means: It doesn't means "Look I've found evidence for my position!" or  "There's fucking life in Mars!" It just means that someone in the scientific community goes "I've found this results to be peculiar, more people should review them" thus helping explain or expand the results and such.
