I just installed my new 1070 and want to put it to work. I just saw that the Witcher 3 is on sale.

I wasnt a huge fan of the Witcher 2.. Got about 3 hours in and dropped it because I found it boring and there was way too much to follow. Should I get 3? or Save my money and get something else later?

If you didnt like 2, you probably wont like 3. I would probably go invest in something else you may enjoy.

3 is bigger, has a lot more content and yet I totally get what you're coming from (Spend a similar amount of time on Witcher 2 myself) and even though the scope is bigger it's just easier to get into this time around.

It helps that it's basically open world now and it doesn't feels like Final Fantasy with a decent fucking storyline for a change like 2 felt. The 1070 can pretty much max it at 1080p and you might need to dial back on hairworks at 1440p but you can still get 50 to 60 at near max settings on 1440p with the 1070

sounds like you may not enjoy witcher 3... it's pretty similar to assassins of kings, only that there's 3 open-world maps (one of them is part of DLC)

Im getting so many mixed signals!! Haha. I've read that people who hated 2 loved 3 and my  brothers said the same thing..

How much did you play? What other kinds of games do you play?

Witcher 3? Steam says 160 hours but I think something got borked I've put well over 200 at this point. I usually like other RPGs and open world games and Witcher 3 while technically and visually very impressive has a lot more in common with computer rpgs from the late 90s like the original Fallout and Fallout 2: there's lots of missions with barely any or no combat at all and most missions have something interesting to them: even the common sidequest of "Go kill this monster" ends up with peasants trying to trick Geralt, the monster having a sympathetic position, being made to decide between two equally shady parties, etc.

Of course if you're more interested in action the combat can be tricky at first but rewarding once you know the tricks. The only thing is that you can end up being way, way overpowered once you know what you're doing with a character and such but it's still lethal: you might be hacking through beasts easily but one mistep and you're quickly overwhelmed and killed so action is also nice too.

well i put down 200 hrs into witcher 3 and i liked 3 far better than 2, so i'm no different lol. though assassins of kings handled pacing a little bit better

Hm.. Alright. Thanks for all the replies. Maybe I'll pick it up. It is on sale after all and I could just return it if I really dont like it within the 2 hours.

Thanks!

i'd hang a bit for the GOTY edition, as that comes with all the DLC and the latest patches.

I've put over 250 hours into The Witcher 3, and I can't even make it through the tutorial of The Witcher 2. Something about the combat, I just find it incredibly unpleasant. In my opinion, the combat is completely different in 3.

I played Witcher 1 beginning about 20x and then I dropped it because I just couldn't stand the combat. That is about 10h gameplay time spent playing tutorial. Then I read all the books and loved it. So I decided to endure the bad combat and give Witcher 1 one more chance.

10h in and it was a chore. Then I got to Wizima and the story kicked in and I just couldn't stop playing it. At the end it was worth it a lot. I was so glad I didn't dropped it.

So I got Witcher 2 aaaaand the same thing. I played tutorial area several times and then dropped it. Then after owning that game for two years I decided to finally force my self trough the beginning and again...after leaving Flotsam I got really hooked and completed the game. I actually liked it so much that I completed it 3 times.

I was so hyped for Witcher 3 that I preordered it so that I can play it on release day. I immediately liked it and did not spend several times repeating the tutorial like in previous games. Then I did a huge mistake which make me drop the game after 80h of playtime. I decided to not make any progress until I finish all question marks on the map which resulted in huge boredom.

I only started to play the game again recently. I am about 50h in and I am enjoying it a lot. I play on hardest difficulty but I have no trouble dealing with anything in combat. I rarely die. I am trying to not focus on doing one thing now. I am doing while this then that and it is a lot more fun.

If you look through my previous posts, you'll see that TW3 is my favourite game of all time.  I played through some of the first, but couldn't complete it because the combat mechanics were awful, I rushed through the second but enjoyed it nonetheless.  With #3, I've already logged 270 hours and am around 10% into my third playthrough (New Game+, death march difficulty), and I'm still not bored!

This is by far the most intelligent, immersive and downright fun game I've ever played!

Do yourself a favor and give it a shot!

I also recently got a 1070 and wanted to put it to work, so I picked this up on sale.  I have only played about an hour or so, but what I have played has been fun-ish and very pretty.  I think once I get the combat down a little more it will be fun, but I am having trouble fighting and controlling the camera.

Overall I would say it was worth it so far.  I am excited to see where the story goes, and I have not seen a prettier game.  That said it is only on sale because the Game of the Year edition will be coming out at the end of the month.  So if you plan on purchasing the DLC it might be a good idea to wait.

2 things I did accidentally due to learning the controls/Game

  1. BBQ'd a Cat I was trying to befriend
  2. Won a fight against some wolves while standing in toxic gas, now my quick save spawns me into instant death.
