Hi all,

I'd like to know if my current CPU is capable of running VR. I currently do not own a powerful enough GPU. I'm running an Intel i5-3570K overclocked to 4 GHz but can be extended to a 4.4 GHz clock speed. Will I need an upgrade? In the SteamVR Performance Test it is rated as a "Capable" CPU. Also, what affordable GPU ($300-$450) should I get? I'm open to both AMD and Nvidia options.

If I really need to upgrade my CPU, are there any suggestions on i5's? As I'm not really into building a PC with an i7 due to cost reasons.

The 3570K would be fine.

If you did feel the need to upgrade, why would you upgrade from an i5 to an i5? That's not really an upgrade, it's still a quad-core quad-thread, and IPC hasn't improved enough between Ivy Bridge and Skylake to warrant an upgrade.

I thought the new i5's had better performance. I looked at the 980 Ti and it sits at the very end of the green bar for SteamVR Performance Test, not sure if the program is that accurate.

I'm hoping to play some Elite Dangerous and maybe in the future Star Citizen in VR.

Your CPU is fine. Sure, not the best thing ever, but there's not much you can do about it without investing a ton. And you need a GPU anyways.

Speaking of which, aim for a 1070. Plain and simple. Get the cheapest one you can find and go for it.

If it's capable then its most likely fine.

For GPU, you can consider GTX 1070 or GTX980Ti on that price range.

I got my 980Ti for $360, you probably can find a better deal than me.

The 980ti is a terrible idea. While it's roughly equal to the 1070 in regular games, the 1070 just walks all over it when it comes to VR. It's not even funny.
