The abit AN52... any help?

Now I know this mainboard I'm playing with is considerably old as in 5 years of age and the company that made it went out of business on December 31, 2008. There isn't much about this board other than it came shortly before Universal abit went defunct. After inheriting it from a friend of mine who is now 70 years old and couldn't get it to work and being into it $147, I got it to be quite the machine IMO. But as I've studied this board more, it seems that the Phenom X4 CPU MAY work but it is a FACT that the Athlon X2 does. Now what would be the best route to take for this machine? (No, the trash is not an option.) <_<

My current system:

abit AN52 | Socket AM2 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+

Kingston HyperX Blu (DDR2 2X2 GB Kit) | Pre-AMD Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 Video Card (1GB)

You could use a Phenom from what one person mentioned on the net but nobody has seen a quad working on this board and at this url http://abit.ws/page/en/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php@pMODEL_NAME=AN52&fMTYPE=Socket%20AM2&pPRODINFO=BIOS you can see it mentions support for Phenom cpus but what ones ?

Thanks for your help and advice everyone, I'll get the highest Athlon 64 X2 first since that does work for sure and get the Phenom later down the road and test it. I guess I'll know pretty much all the quirks with this board soon enough.
