Hi all,

I currently have a file server I am using as the main fileserver and media server for my house and I am currently on the market for a good SSD to put in it as a high speed storage drive. I am wondering what the best SSD would be, as it runs plex and is shared with several of my friends and family it routinely has heavy networking load. I am wondering what a good SSD for it would be, as I am in the market for something relatively low capacity (120-180gb) and high reliability and endurance. I am split between samsung sm863 120gb and a 850 evo, which should I buy (any others you guys would recommend?)

Thanks,

Thanks,

Any drive with lots of IOps should do fine. Keep in mind that in order to use anywhere near the performance of an SSD, you would have to use 10Gb network gear.

I would get the 850 EVO. Fill it up with your files and set it to read only so that the SSD doesn't get written to all day (the OS will still write and rearrange the data).

If you were planning on using an SSD as the actual storage device on the NAS, then I wouldn't see a point in doing so as unless you're rocking a 10GbE network. And having high IOPs probably won't matter either because of network overhead slowing that part down.

Thanks,

the 850 evo are good i would go for a enterprise ssd a gen or two old if you really want it to last or think you will be writing/reading that much . my 840 evo has over 20tb written to it and it hasn't really degraded at all wear lvl is only at 61

No reason to get a ssd. You will be limited by networking either way. Id suggest a raid array instead as they can be the same speed and much cheaper for a given capacity.

Thanks,

NAS servers don't normally contain SSD's.

They are more prone to failure, plus, on larger scales, even of more than 1TB, HDD's are FAR CHEAPER in price / gb
