I understand but 130 more for the option to upgrade to 1440p or even 4k is worth it at that point.  Otherwise the 1060 would be the card to buy.

That's true, but it's still a stark comparison that almost every single model is out. Also 299 for a 480 is pretty steep. ESP when 1060 can be had for 289.

Nvidia doesn't have stable stock, but it almost always has numerous models available, while the 480 *sometimes* has one model available in the US.

According to what I know, it's possible that the chip fabs cannot produce enough to meet AMD's demands, but that's only because I can't find who globalfoundries makes chips for.  I really do not think that is the case though.

Samsung, Apple, Qualcomm are the biggest 14nm users out there (more than Nvidia and AMD), and all at least partially use GloFlo.

Samsung make their own and Apple's.  That really just leaves Qualcomm (a couple other mobile processor companies) and small lithography flash companies divided between Globalfoundries and TSMC.

If AMD can't stock Polaris GPUs, then how is there such a surplus of flash chips for companies like Hynix and other misc. RAM/NAND companies?  I know those are different lithography but the same wafer is used for 100-7nm.

It isn't just the supply of wafer, but the manufacturing capacity of the Fab 8 of GloFo.

I don't know what any of this means anymore.  We'll be lucky to see Zen at all before Kaby Lake or Cannon lake with AMD operating at this rate.  I'm guessing GloFo needed an investor and Samsung needed more production and AMD got like 2 months out of their one fab in new york for polaris.

Sites like semiaccurate and some other analysts accounted low to no nVidia stock due to bad yields and they weren't able to ship as much as needed so quickly. Locally I can see only RX 480 reference designs from few makers - in stock.

While based on the same process, smartphone SoC's are much more robust against defects than GPU's are (its the whole idea of the low power node vs high power node.)

They probably had much greater demand than anticipated. They probably had a very large amount of stock considering dies were probably being manufactured since the beginning of this year. There's simply more demand than supply. If you want to confirm that they had a huge amount of stock just wait for the 3rd quarter earnings release I wouldn't be surprised if the revenue from graphics and computing shot up a bunch.

I guess I never bought that yields are that great of a factor with how consistently Intel supplies the world's entire population with new chips each generation.  If yields are truly low then it doesn't make sense for them to even attempt to manufacture the chip until they have a better means of production.

Intel has by far the best manufacturing process in the world for silicon and if you remember correctly, they almost completely scrapped the Broadwell consumer lineup before Skylake released due to yield issues.

This is a big gap between too low to be viable to very mature. Could be the yield is high enough economically(so they don't lose money) but still too low to meet the market demand.

Nvidia doesn't have stable stock, but it almost always has numerous models available, while the 480 *sometimes* has one model available in the US.

 

Either way yea both are clearly seeing yield issues.
