Whonnoc(?) server fileysstem

Go to solution Solved by MoonlightSylv,

It's @LinusTech

I'm still wondering if Linus is using BTRFS on this server. I'm really hoping not because it's not considered "stable" or really "production ready". It's not randomly corrupting files now but it's not exactly mission critical ready.

https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Main_Page#Stability_status

I also must ask @LinusSebastian, why not FreeNAS with ZFS?

A bunch of Z-Devs across multiple drives pooled into a Z-Pool where your employees could mount a SAMBA share that targets a Data Store (I believe that's the name) would probably make much more sense when it comes to data security.

I have the same luck on Twitter. This does spark discussion around the topic though.

I think the extent of the knowledge of most people reading this is "RAID 1," and maybe if you're lucky, someone who has come into contact with the term "RAID 6."

True

What's with yor setup being 192gb of RAM?

If I remember correctly, that server used 3 RAID 5's that were striped together in windows (until the motherboard crapped in its pants and fried one of the RAID cards).

Wasn't it the storanator he was using to test BTRFS.

whonnock was the BTRFS madness.

It's an old Z800 Workstation that I use for rendering and CAD, so the 192 GB really helps if I'm doing a CPU assisted OpenCL render.

Jesus christ, what is your job?

That pretty much says exactly what I previously said (and does windows server even support BTRFS)

There is, however mention of a storage server in this video that is using BTRFS and you have to remember that there are other servers in use including clover server (if I got the name correct) which if I remember was built and pressed into service around the time that Whonnock went brown trouser on the motherboard side and took out one of the three RAID cards used in that server (in fact, is it even in use since when last it was seen, it was just a single mechanical hard drive and I don't even think that there was mention of rebuilding it with a new motherboard).
