Coil whine. In order to make PSU ErP 2013 compliant, there was some changes made to the 5vsb circuitry and that cause some PSU to whine. I've heard complaint about it from some seasonic models, the original CX series, etc. Due note that it doesn't happen to all samples, and it is a luck of a draw.

If it is annoying, you could attempt a RMA.

My cx550m arrived today with my 1060 and after installing everything I noticed a problem as the power supply emits a high frequency noise when it's plugged in and turned on but the computer is turned off. Is this normal?

Corsair RMA will re-do the order for you as they accept RMA submissions for coil whine. Happens to the best of us. Most companies won't do that but I believe Corsair and EVGA are some of the very few that will.

The more you know. But yeah, OP can get an RMA through.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Sorry for the late response, I posted this at 1 am where I live. Could the coil whine reduce my psu's life in any way? After waking up it's actually gone quieter.

Nope, coil whine will not reduce the lifespan.
