Obviously more ram is better right? Well I only ever hear people say 8GB is enough, why? Why not more? Sure it can be expensive, but what exactly does ram help do? How much of a speed difference would 16GB compared to 32GB be?

nothing if you don't have programs that will use it, to little ram is a problem but anything extra doesn't really add performance

Ok well what programs benefit it? Does it help with video editing/rendering?

Video rendering, and similar things like 3D modeling.

RAM capacity doesn't speed anything up, it basically just prevents things from slowing down. If you run out of RAM, things slow down a lot. If you're not out of RAM, then things aren't being slowed down due to RAM shortage, and adding even more RAM won't do anything at all since it's already as un-slowed as it can get.

Ok that makes more sense then thank you. I was wondering if 32GB is necessary for 1080P editing/rendering or is 16GB enough?

Yep quite a bit depending on the program used, video editing software tends to use a lot of memory if you plan to do that get at least 16gb

I have maxed out 16 GB before with 1080p video, but it depends on the video a lot, I had four 1080p videos overlaid on each other so it was essentially equivalent to rendering at 4K. Upgrading to 24 GB was enough, it sat around 20 GB usage during the render (that was after closing chrome). Again it will depend a lot on the content of the render though.

Yes but how many tabs do you have open 200?

RAM is where immediate data of programs live. More RAM is only useful if you are running programs that need it. If you are only using say 8GB at most, then adding more RAM isn't going to do much because unused RAM is wasted RAM.

To put in another way, it's like saying having 2TB of hard drive space is beneficial over 1TB, even though you only use at most 800GB. Having empty hard drive space doesn't really do much for performance.

Thank you, I think 16GB will be fine for me then as I mostly at max only ever do 1080P, not overlapping either. I just do game plays for my YouTube channel so the most editing I do is adding text or cutting out, pasting, stuff like that.

I am using about half my RAM right now but idk what all is using it, task manager says 4.2 is available of my 8GB and with 4 chrome tabs open 1 playing 1080P video on youtube I am using 46%

You don't need more. In fact, even if you start spiking close to it, you don't "need" more until you start experiencing a ton of page file swapping (or your storage drive access goes through the roof). Although at that point, I would see if closing things helps first. If say I started up Windows and it was already thrashing the storage device, then yeah, that would be a red flag for needing more RAM.

The closer you are to 100% usage without page file swapping, the better you're using your RAM, as strange as this sounds.

3D rendering (like After Effects), VMs, servers with many simultaneous users, and computational work.

I'm actually running into issue with my 32GB not being enough when running some basic machine learning algorithms (random forests via R) on large datasets where it stores the data and models in RAM in order to keep the already really long processing time from being bottlenecked by an SSD/HDD.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Spoiler

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

I saw what you mean when I checked my own task manager. I guess I should get 128GB of DDR4 and over clock it to 3600 MHz just to be on the safe side.

You need 64GB of ram to run 64 Chrome tabs.

Btw I was obviously joking about 128GB of ram, that would never be necessary for me, at max 36 32 but I doubt I need even that much.
