Is it possible to overclock only one core?

Go to solution Solved by Torn,

While you may not want to due to your heat issues, it is possible. In the BIOS you're looking for a setting called or similar to (All Cores) which can be changed to (Per core). This allows you to OC 1 or all cores as you wish.

I'd just like the little extra single core preformance boost on core 0, all the apps I use are mostly single threaded and it would be amazing if I was able to overclock it.

The reasoning why I can't overclock my whole CPU is because it idles at 60c and its load is already 95c.

And I would like it if the solution doesn't have to go with disabling cores.

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Yep, should be able to do so in your bios if your motherboard supports overclocking, or if you use a program to overclock it, then it might be possible in there as well.

I know that with my i7 4790k and msi z97-g55 sli motherboard I can overclock individual cores to different speeds, however I haven't messed with it much as I've only got the stock cooler.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

yeah, but theres no way to resolve that other than delidding. im taking the chance and gaining a bit more single core performance as that is more important to me than the longevity of the chip (if anything, the max im using this for is 3 years after today)

will check now.

I7 3770k and hyper 212x

remounted, reinstalled, blowed dust, even tried another cooler.

The heatpipes aren't hot btw.

On your MOBO I think you're looking for AI Tweeker,  you can set each cores ratio.

Next question, what program are you using to monitor your temps?

yah it's possible, look in your bios

359697015_517a5ea5d4_z.jpg

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

hwmonitor

as i said, physically checking my heatsink (the fins, the heatpipes) with my hand reveals that its just warm while on load (not hot to touch)

Well when it gets to the point that you don't care about possibly ruining the chip I'd delid apply new paste and relid. If the base of the pipes near the chip aren't hot while the chip is 90 sounds like under lid thermal paste failure.

the only backup cpu I have is a q9650 :P

i dont have a razer, vice, hammer or any extra paste, after reapplying 3 times.

the same result after reapplying 3 times and remounting 3 times. the base gets a bit hot to touch, and the pipes are only a bit colder.

edit: it is under lid thermal paste failure. :P

nothing local about walmart man!!  They'll ship almost anything to their store and you can pick it up, I'm sure a pre-paid credit card would probably work if it has enough money on it (no age or actual requirements apply)
