Is it safe to overclock my FX-6300 with my stock cooler? If so how far can I push it and could you give me tips on overclocking?(basically how to do it) I have never done it before, but just bought a 1060 and wanted to bump up performance a little bit until I upgrade my CPU.

Thanks.

No, it is not. Keep the CPU under 67*C

its safe to OC as long as your temps are fine, which should be basically not much at all in your case but anyway go into the BIOS and raise the CPU multiplier a bit and then boot and run a stress test like AIDA64 for 10min and if it crashes up the voltage a little bit and then raise the multiplier if that works and then just keep doing that untill you cant go higher or your CPU goes above 85C-90C ish

*edit*

i have never overclocked an AMD chip btw this is just a standart tutorial on how to do it in general and with the stock cooler it might not be the best idea in the world

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

Max safe temps for FX is 67*C. 85*C would kill it.

Since when is CPU performance measured in thermal durability? What are you even talking about? Please stop giving bad advice and/or trolling. Thank you.

i just think that most CPUs can handle more then that, thats all

That does not depend on the CPU. It depends on the socket. Intel use LGA type sockets which have higher thermal limits and allows them to be lazy with the stock coolers. AMD use a different socket design which is not meant to go over 70*C

huh thanks for the info, i thought it was all about what the silicon could handle before getting to hot

With the stock cooler you can probably get 3.8 ghz across all 6 cores, maybe more, but i wouldnt go a whole lot higher. Go into the bios and disable Turbo Core and APM, you shouldn't need to touch voltages for 3.8, max temp on the FX line is 61c(as recommended) by AMD, throttle temp is should be around 70c, AM3/3+ max socket temp is 70c, so watch those too, if your board has a socket sensor.

Not everything is made of silicon. Silicon can handle much more than 100*C yet intel doesn't allow you to go over that.

i had never thought the socket would be the first thing to go from heat. well i wish i would have known this earlier tbh

It is absolutely safe as long as you do it... safely :P That is, always monitor your temperatures. Try little by little, and whenever it starts to get too hot, well, that's your limit on that cooler. If you don't push it despite seeing high temps, the worst that can happen is that you have to give up too soon and settle for a disappointing OC until you improve your cooling, nothing more.

But it applies to any cooler really, stock or not.

I just used AMD Overdrive as it monitors the temps, loads up the CPU and slowly cranks the clock and voltage within defined limits. Cinebench score went up by a fair amount. I'm at 4.1 GHz stable with the stock cooler and no thermal throttling. When I get a better cooling solution I'll do some manual tweaking, but I'm happy with performance for now. FX-6300 too :)
