Any point downgrading PSU?

I have an HX1050 right now... and i really don't need it

I did the PSU Calculator and it said i would use about 506 at max load (i put in future items i plan on upgrading to later this year)

 

I read somewhere your PSU doesn't use more power then it needs is that true?

So if my PC is using 300W or something right now its not wasting power is it?

Your PSU doesn't consume more power than the PC needs.

 

Also "max load" means you're running Prime95, Furmark, and Crystal Mark on all of your disks at the same time and is more or less a workload you'll never see unless you're deliberately doing it.

No it just means the efficiency the PSU will be running at is probably less then what it is sold as. Basically you are wasting a bit of power. Maybe a couple dollars a year.

Although your PSU doesn't deliberately use more power than your system needs, it's capacity is almost 2x your PC's power consumption! So it tends to lose efficiency, and you tend to lose a few dollars a year... To reduce power wastage (those couple of dollars I said just now), and to increase efficiency, get a PSU of a capacity, a 100W higher than your PC's requirements - if your PC takes 550W at max. get a 650W PSU (I recommend Corsair RM650X, or EVGA Supernova G2 650 they're the best in the market!)

Just keep your PSU. No point in spending money on a lower-wattage PSU unless it's a crazy improvement in quality and performance. You'll be fine with your HX.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.
