So I'm trying to help a friend of mine overclock his 4790k to around 4.7Ghz. He's using an H100i V2 to cool it, so he has plenty of headroom for overclocking. But for whatever reason, he can't get it to run it stable at that speed. Not without turning up the voltage really high. It's only able to run stable when cranked up to an uncomfortable 1.425 volts, which puts it at around 90°C under full load. This puzzles me, because I've seen stable overclocks for that chip go up to 4.8Ghz at around 1.3-1.325 volts. So I have no idea what's holding his chip from reaching that point.

The only thing I can think of, is that before he got his H100i V2 around a month ago, he was using the stock Intel cooler. He had it installed ever since he bought the PC, which was nearly a year ago. I've always told him that he should be using a water cooler, but only recently has he taken action on that. My only theory, is that because he was using the stock cooler for so long, it may have degraded the chip's performance due to inadequate cooling. However I'm not sure how well that theory holds up, so I need a second opinion. I'm not a very experienced overclocker, so I hope you guys can help.

each chip is different to the other so some might get a better overclock than others.

also unless he overclocked the CPU on the stock cooler there is no reason for the chip to be damaged

Its possible he didnt get a good OC chip, it happens.
Can I ask what volts he needs to get a stable 4.5 and what temp it hits?

What motherboard does he have?

just curious....

Ryzen 7 5800X3D , Arctic Liquid Freezer  III , Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite , Corsair Vengeance 32GB , Gigabyte RTX 5070Ti ,  WD SN850 / MP44L

Corsair RM 850x, LIAN LI Lancool 207

He has an Asus Z97 ROG Maximus VII Hero motherboard.
If I recall correctly, he needed 1.275 volts to run 4.5Ghz stable, and around 1.325 volts to run 4.6Ghz stable.
The temps for both were around the same, hovering about 80°C under full load.

It's possible it may have been overclocked while he was using the stock cooler. Because as soon as he swapped it out with the water cooler, the clock speed was at 4.4Ghz as opposed to the stock 4.0Ghz. So the motherboard could've been dialing in an automatic overclock, but again, I'm not sure how sound that theory is.
