I haven't played Half Life yet, (I know, shocker.)

But I'm really not sure what to get. Of course I would get half life 1, but for half life 2, there are three variants.

Half life 2

Half life 2: episode one

Half life 2: episode two

Is half life 2 just a mix of episode one and two or do i have to buy all three?

I havent play it either, but for what I heard you should go acording to the chronological order so you can get the story from begining to end.

Dude that's what I'm trying to figure out lol.

There are 3 variants to half life 2.

I Havnt completed HL1, it isn't required, there are only minor references like the "microwave casserole" incident.

Why though?

Why isnt it just 2:1, 2:2, and 2:3?

2 and 2:1 are different, 2:3 and 2:4 were never released, 2.4 was completed (not valve) but 2.3 wasn't. Then 2.3 was delayed and nothing has been heard about it since.

Half-Life -> Half-Life 2 -> H-L2: Ep1 -> H-L2: Ep2

There's also Black Mesa, which is a independent dev-team's retelling of the events of the original Half-Life. It's really good, though it has bad voice acting and the human character models seem to all have hunchbacks and too-long arms.

It's worth a go. The best in the series, IMO.

Those are also made by another developer other than Valve, which is Gearbox. They're generally not as good as the other games, but they're still a part of the franchise.

I assume back in 2004 they planned on Half-Life 2 being a single, standalone product with the intention that Half-Life 3 would exist at some finite point in time. But a few years later the plans apparently changed, and they seem to have postponed HL3 and released two expansions for HL2—Episode 1 and Episode 2. Episode 2 ends on a huge cliffhanger, so I guess they still meant to release either an Episode 3 or Half-Life 3 at the time. We don't know if they ever will.

Anyway, if you want to play Half-Life 2, the chronological and narrative order is:

Half-Life 2 > Half-Life 2: Episode 1 > Half-Life 2: Episode 2

You can absolutely buy the base game by itself. If you want to play the Episodes, they literally pick up where the previous entry left off, so it would be best to play them in order.
