Depends on how much you need. Any more than 4tb id run a raid array for redundancy. Running arrays with 4+tb drives makes array rebuilding difficult if you do have a drive failure.

  • Depends on your definition of "Big"
  • Depends on Usage of those disks.
  • If you keep backups then both the above don't really matter, it's just for convenience IMO.
  • If youre asking about buying however, might as well go big, up to a point, example 240GB SSD is the sweet spot for price at approx £70 and for mech drives I think 2 o3 3TB is the sweet spot.

Say 1x4TB or 4x1TB

I just thought whether it is more safe like when one will broke you will lose 1/4 of your data theoretically.

For me I stick with rule #3 and keep backups, so don't really lose my data... had that problem in my early years and that was before "just downloading" was an option. I'd say grab a 2 or 3 TB drive and if possible just grab something like a WD mycloud 3TB for regular backups to it over the network. That's if you can't go "proper" NAS of course for backups. If neither of those is an option, then get a 2TB mech drive and also grab a 1 or 2TB USB drive for backups of your most needed stuff that either can't be replaced or would take too long to download.
