GPU or no GPU?

Go to solution Solved by Skiiwee29,

no.

Will a graphics card take ANY load off the CPU/system if I'm NOT doing games or graphics?

All I'm really interested in is a lightning fast Windows/apps experience.

Will the system be faster if the CPU (iGPU) doesn't have to deal with any graphic operations?

I just ordered:
i7 6700K
ASUS Z170-Deluxe
32GB Corsair Vengeance 3200 MHz
Samsung 950 Pro 512 GB M.2 NVMe

I didn't order any graphics card because I don't need it for *graphics* performance - but could it help the *overall* performance?

It will not take any noticeable load off of the CPU, Load times are mainly dependant on not just the CPU but also the RAM and Storage that you are using, for instance as you probably know a SSD is much better when it comes to read/write speeds than a HDD.

MochPot: AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB 3200MHz DDR4, ASRock X370 Fatality K7, 8GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070, 256gb Salvaged Intel Rando NVME SSD, Corsair RM750x, Corsair Carbide 275R, Windows 10 Pro

ZenServerRequiem: AMD Ryzen 3 2200g, 32GB 3200MHz DDR4, MSI B450 Gaming Plus, 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 960, 2GB Nvidia Quadro P400, 500gb Salvaged Intel Rando NVME SSD (Cache Drive only), 3 x Seagate Baracuda 2TB, Corsair CX500, Corsair Carbine 750T, Limetech Unraid (Running Plex, Jackett, Sonarr, WireShark, Duck DNS, Ubuntu Server VM for MC server)

If it was lappy with a ULV chip then yes, it does help but since you're using a desktop CPU then the TDP isn't low enough to restrict both the performance of the iGPU and CPU part :P

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Concise and correct, here is a guy who knows what he's talking about. I like it.

But to understand why you can look at this image. It shows that the iGPU in the 6700k is separate from the four CPU cores. While there are some tasks that are offloaded to the CPU cores, there is not a significant difference.

Seeing so much silicon wasted on the iGPU that almost no one uses on an i7 makes me cry salty alligator tears :'(

Well, *I'm* gonna use it! :)

A pity they didn't put "Iris Pro" in the 6700 though... (for a time I did consider the NUC Skull Canyon)

At first I thought the same: true for gamers, but people like you (you seem to care a lot about powerful CPU and not at all about graphics) benefit from it.

Then I realized that precisely people like you could benefit from onboard graphics or ultra basic discrete GPUs if that allows for extra cores in the CPU itself, which gamers may not really use anyway.

In that sense, I prefer the APU vs X99 approach, I don't see the point of giving everyone iGPUs in full sized systems. Then again, who's making billions on CPU sales, me or Intel? xD
