SteamOS for htpc

I have a handful of random parts and I'm thinking of building a htpc. When I think about adding $100 to a $300 build for an OS it makes it a stupid purchase. My question would be, how do I find out what hardware is covered in the steamOS? I have experience with Linux, namely debian, but that was over a decade ago and I don't have the patience these day's to tinker and trouble shoot a ton.  I can buckle down for initial install but don't want it to require a ton of messing with after that.  Can I get some advice on this?
