GTX 1080 Problems - Please Help ;-;

Go to solution Solved by ShadyOrb09,

Okay, the problem is fixed now, from what I can tell so far. The problem was actually my CPU, but not because it was bottlenecking it was because the CPU was running 55C idle, which is horrible, and would go up even higher when under load and started to throttle. Anyways, so happy and excited to finally play a damn game. Thanks for your help dude.

The two things that solved the problem:

1) Changing thermal paste/reapplying it.

2) Updating BIOs to the current version.

Hello, I just bought a GTX 1080 Strix and I'm having problems. I bought it 2 days ago but I've been busy so I never really got the chance to play any games.

I played a bit of Battlefield 3 yesterday with it and I wasn't watching the FPS but it felt like 180-200 FPS.

About maybe 30 minutes ago I decided to try some BF4 on Ultra settings of course. Playing on a 64 player server on 1080p Ultra settings I was getting 45-60 sometimes 100+ mostly just below 60.

So I'm obviously concerned that this card is broken or something. I really can't figure out what is causing the problem, and I'm a bit stressed right now because I just want to play some games...

The only thing I can possibly guess it'd be would be my FX-8350 bottlenecking it, but it doesn't make sense because my old R9 280x ran above 60FPS in Battlefield on Ultra most times, the occasional dip but nothing to this degree.

I can't really afford a new CPU. I know owning a FX-8350 is a little stupid if you have a GTX 1080, but I bought this first so I could save for the i7-6700k. I'm only 17, so I'm not exactly able to dish out $800 when I feel like it.

Any ideas guys? I'm going to try to flash my bios with a new update (at least I think it's new).

I'm so sad ;-;

Full Specs:

MOBO - 970 Gaming

RAM - 10GB 1600mhz (Weird number, I know.)

CPU - FX-8350 4.0GHz

GPU - GTX 1080 Strix

PSU - 650W EVGA Supernova

Going to flash my bios, wish me luck :'(

I know a FX-8350 bottlenecks the GTX 1080, but nothing to this degree. I even watched other people play with this config fine above 110FPS on BF4 with Ultra settings.

what about other games? are they running fine?

Not really sure, BF3 and BF4 are really the only games I've tested so far. I'll give another game I play a lot a shot.

you'll think i'm crazy...but i know what your problem is...and i don't know what it is or how to solve it at the same time...

i myself had this issue one day just after i got my old GTX 780...BF4 was running perfectly fine at 100FPS but BF3 was running at like...40FPS...and i never was able to find out why...re-installing the game, the drivers many times...nothing fixed it...i had completely wipe my main drive and re-install windows and then it was working just fine...but you're right here is one of my own video from my youtube archive i was using an AMD FX-8320 with a GTX 780 and it was able to easily drive the GPU to it's max potential and you can see 110FPS quite often in the video:

More BF4 footage with the same CPU/GPU combo...again...plenty of FPS:

It's possible my old AMD driver still possibly linger, or maybe Windows itself is just confused. I did use DDU when uninstalling my old AMD drivers, however I will try to reinstall Windows if this BIOs flash doesn't work.

good luck...if you manage to pin point what is causing the issue PLEASE let me know...cause i know many other people have had the same problem and not being able to help them more than that is frustrating...it's defenetly something to do with either the display drivers or windows...i did tried to clean and re-install the game fresh and it kept running like crap so i wouldn't waste time with that.

I will reply back with the results, thanks for the hope, lol. :)

Wait, what about popping out the CMOS battery?

this will reset your bios settings to stock...if you're unsure about what you've put in there it might be a good idea to reset but keep in mind you'd loose all your saved profiles if you have any...so you'd have to re-dial your overclock from the beginning...

Do you mean stock as in, stock BIOs version? I've popped it out a few times attempting to overclock. Maybe it's the stock version and that's causing the performance issues?

no i mean it will revert all the settings within the BIOS to ''optimised default settings'' it will not change what version of the bios you're running.

Also, overclock or not...the AMD FX-8350 even at stock should push upward of 70-80FPS consistently in pretty much every maps...so i doubt that's your problem.

Just got the BIOs updated and everything seems a lot more snappy. I could just imagining it, but it really does seem more snappy. Going to start BF4 now.

Just played a round of the Operation Firestorm map lowest frame rate was 68. Definitely 10x better then before. I'm going to try and reinstall Windows, hopefully that's the cherry on top. Not exactly a 1080's best performance, but I am running a very unbalanced config. Once I get the money I'm getting a new CPU right away.

Great to hear it was a relatively simple fix! If you don't have it already, getting CPU and GPU monitoring could be useful, such as MSI afterburner to monitor the GPU usage and well... I use the Intel Extreme Tuning utility to monitor my CPU and memory, sorry I do not know if AMD has an equivalent program but HWmonitor could be useful for you.

I have one now, lol. I'm using MSI Afterburner, it has a nice interface. :)
