HDD very loud

Hello,

I had a problem with my Western Digital Blue 1TB HHD with it being very loud so I sent it back to WD but the replacement does the exact same thing. I am now thinking it is a setting or some kind of power option that makes it this loud all of the time. It sounds like a fan that is working hard to keep everything cool. Although, I'm sure it isn't a fan because when the HDD is removed the noise disappears. Could there be a fault elsewhere that causes this? Like the power supply delivering too much power to the HDD causing the noise? Also, I've checked using some programs and it says the HDD is in good condition, no errors being detected and it is has the expected read the write speeds.

Could just be how it is mounted or it is just how it sounds. I went from a WD green to a WD black and I can very much so hear the black over the green.

I would double check the mount of the hard drive. The Blues (the newer ones too) are usually fairly quiet.

personally i would take the drive out the pc, but keep the sata and power cables attached to it, reboot the pc and hold the drive in your hand to feel if it is vibrating a lot, if you feel a lot of vibration or it is still realy loud it is a ''bad'' drive, otherwise it is most likely the mount in the case.

I'm pretty sure it's mounted correctly as I don't hear any loud vibrations or anything like that. I do hear the 'normal' hard drive noise when loading up a game it's just the other constant fan like noise that's annoying. I'm sure WD tested the drive before they sent me the replacement which is why I think it's something to do with my PC not the hard drive itself.

This is the reason my WD black is packed into a 5.25" bay with neopreen :P

 

But generally, hard drive noise is not the hard drive, but the drive's vibrations making something else make noise.

(Like a fan filter, or a cable)

Yeah, I would double check with the drive outside of the case (while on) to see if it is just the drive alone.

 

They make some noise, but I don't consider it fan like.

 

Also, to ensure your drive isn't DOA, run WD Lifeguard Diagnostic, extended test. It will take a long time (several hours) but it scans the drive end to end and if you pass, it's good.

 

My eight year old 2TB WD black started dying with a constant clock tick tick sound. It did fail the above test so I stopped using it.

I'm pretty sure you have tried other cables, if not try an other powersata or even a molex to sata connector if you have1.

After doing that test it says the drive has passed. I don't know what to do now seeing as this was pretty much just sent by WD as a replacement.

Hmm, did it make noise while you ran the test? Yeah, it shouldn't be that loud. I just got a new 4TB WD Red in and it's dead silent.

The fan like noise was present throughout and every 30 mins or so it made normal hard drive noises. I took out an old WD Scorpio Blue from a laptop and put it in my PC to see what it sounded like. It was pretty much silent and it's around 6 years old. Maybe I just got unlucky twice:P

Well, that's pretty strange...yeah...I guess you got unlucky twice...It should be silent unless it's getting hit by a random IO test (Which makes any drive seek a lot / sound loud)

 

 @Captain_WD Any ideas on why the blue drive is so loud?

I have two WD Blue 1 TB  drives (WD10ezex) and they make a horrible high pitch whining noise. They are mounted in a S340 with all possible screws I haven't tried much trouble shooting but I did set them to shut down after 1 minute which isn't a great solution but makes the drives less annoying

So, if I understand correctly, the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests of the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool, correct? 

Could you get the raw values of the S.M.A.R.T. status with another tool and post them here? Make sure you hide your serial number!

 

Also, could you take a photo of the way the drive is mounted in your computer? Make sure no cables or anything else is touching the drive. Make sure all the screws are firmly placed and no other parts are loose and able to vibrate. 

 

If you have the drive on a different mounting slot or outside of the case do you hear the same noise? Does the drive make the noise when working outside of the case? 

 

It may be the case that the drive itself is blocking part of the air that should be going through your case and one or more temperature sensors are detecting lack of airflow and are compensating with the fans. Try checking if any of your fans are spinning faster with your drive than without it. 

 

Could you make a video/recording of the sound that you are hearing?
