Hey there

I'm building my first right in a couple of weeks, and am on a pretty tight budget. I only have $400 for CPU and GPU

(everything else I already have bought)

I already chose a I5 6500, but I can't decide between a EVGA 960 OR 1060.

I can go over by about $50, but prefer not to.

I plan to do 1080p high settings, above 45fps but preferable above 60fps.

Mostly games like Rocket League or ETS2. Nothing too demanding.

960 or 1060?

Thanks

The 1060 is a MUCH MUCH better gpu, but you might be able to get a 970 new or used for anywhere between 140-180 USD and that might be the best option without blowing the bank.

Can't you budget in a used Gtx 970 for a bit less than 200$? Or perhaps a new aftermarket RX 480, that would be an option as well.

My sad reality of buying a 960 a month before the 1060 release  :(

The 960 you have there is the same price/lower as a 1060. (ex. EVGA $250, EVGA SC is $260, the MSI one I have is $270.)

note: I'm guessing the system your building is the pcpartpicker link below?

Vulcan (Main): Intel Xeon E3-1241 V3 | MSI GTX 1060 Armor OC | G. Skill Sniper 16GB + 4GB @1600  | Crucial BX100 120GB, 1TB WD Caviar Blue, 2TB Seagate Barracuda, 1TB External Seagate Portable | EVGA 650 GQ | Cryorig H7 | NZXT Source 210 Elite

Carbon (Laptop): Lenovo ThinkPad x230 | Core i7 3520m | 8GB Memory (2x4GB)  | 180GB SSD, Sandisk Ultra 128GB SD Card

480s are sadly almost impossible to find in the US, and never at a reasonable price.

GTX 970 is like GTX 1060.

So if you can find some GTX 970 for lower price than GTX 1060, go for it :)

The 1060 is a much better gpu than the 970, It has effectively 2.5 GB more vram, it's 15% faster right now, it's significantly better in DX12, and that 15% gap will likely grow a lot in this next year as Nvidia prioritizes drivers for the 1000 series over the 900 series, just like what happened with the 900 series over the 700 series. I wouldn't buy the 970 right now and especially not the 960. The 960 wasn't even good when it launched, the 1060 is an enormous improvement.

Even if the 960 would be enough:

The 1060 has:

- 70%~ more Performance (that's a massi ve boost..)

- 50% faster Memory Interface (192 bit instead 128 bit)

- 50% more Memory (6gb instead 4gb)

The GTX 1060 is around the same level as the GTX 980. sometimes slightly faster, sometimes a bit slower. But overall the better card, because 6gb Vram vs. 4gb, less power consumption and newer technology/architecture.

Overall, you shouldn't buy old gen anymore.

If the 1060 is too expensiv e for you, take a Look into the RX 470 4gb, which should be like 60-90 bucks less. At least a similar Pricepoint as the GTX 960.
