My new PC I built two weeks ago:

**CPU** | AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor
**CPU Cooler** | Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
**Motherboard** | Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
**Memory** | Corsair Vengeance 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866

**Storage** | Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
**Video Card** |Asus Radeon R9 380 4GB Video Card
**Case** | Enermax OSTROG ATX Mid Tower Case
**Power Supply** | Thermaltake TR2 600W ATX Power Supply

I have only noticed the smell twice, once while I was doing some cable management with overwatch running. The second time I smelt was when I was playing GTA for a couple of hours. List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. To be honest I'm not sure if it really is something burning. Could it be just hot air? I've made sure that no wires are touching any of the heatsinks. Any help is appreciated.

Hey there :)

As the guys suggested this may be caused by the CPU, PSU or some of the other parts. Try identifying where exactly is the smell coming from. Check the temps of the different parts when the computer is under heavy load (may be with a stress test application) and see if anything goes above the regular operating temperatures and if the smell comes back again.

In order to exclude the HDD as the potential cause of the issue and to make sure the data on it is safe I'd run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and see if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests. This should put you on the safe side that your data is secure and you are in no danger of data loss.
