Weird network usage

Yesterday we finally got optical cables to our door, and connection should be 20/10. For anything better we would have to pay much more, so this will have to do for now.

But I noticed something strange.

While downloading, my network usage is jumping up and down all the time.

Is it normal?

Were you downloading torrents or mega files?

Depends on what you're downloading. The semi-perfect pattern looks like drops in connection at exact intervals. Do you notice any loss of performance?

Yeah that was when I was downloading torrent file.

But same happends when downloading windows updates or some 20GB zip file.

Well download speed in torrent drop from 2,2MB/s to 1,7MB/s and jump back up and down.

It's all normal mate! So the way a torrent works is that you have to download thousands of different files to make a big one, and in your case the files were scattered worldwide. You see that gap because the WIFI isn't used when the torrent is searching for other files to be downloaded. And in your case all the files downloaded were about the same size. If this works on a regular download from like windows or something that would mean some trouble with your connectivity but for now your safe.

Some files restrict your WIFI download speed because the server can't give you that mcuh data every second, that is why you see that change in download speed.

Well it's not suppose to drop out at regular intervals unless you're downloading separate files of equal size sequentially. Unfortunately if you can replicate the issue on another computer then it's out of your hands. You'll have to call the internet provider and explain the issue to them. Last ditch effort would be to power off and back on the router.

Ah well I just contacted my internet provider, and those spikes are because of TV.

Since we went to fiber, TV shouldn't have to do anything with my speed on PC, but my internet provider isn't owner of that fiber cable, and speed is limited, so that 20MBps is hared between 2x TV + my PC.

So if I turn off TV, it's working as it should, without those spikes.

Well, it isn't that good to share the bandwidth with your 2 TV's. I had my share with sharing the bandwidth with my phone and whenever I wanted to call and look on the internet the internet win't work lol. Try changing the WIFI channels or contact your provider again because if you change the channels and make your TV on a different channel you should be able to use the full bandwidth.
