Hello there guys! So I'm building my PC. It isn't really anything too fancy for now but I want a good CPU air cooler and I've been wandering around the so many choices around.. I plan to overclock and/or stream on twitch so.. I've been left super unsure and confused in terms of... is my mobo going to be big enough, is my RAM going to be okay with that cooler or is it too big etc etc. So quick overview of my specs. I just want to say that I do want to get the Phanteks because considering the reviews it blows Noctua D15 out the water and also it looks TONS better than the D15 (plus that color choice ;))

My Specs so far:

CPU:  Intel Core i7-4790 3.6GHz
Motherboard:  MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150
Memory:  Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Case:  NZXT Phantom 410 Midi Tower Chassis - Black  ( I strongly believe I will need a full tower case for this cooler though)

I chose the 4790 because I didn't really have the budged for DDR4 so that seemed like the best choice. Really would appreciate if anyone can get me out of my rabbit hole because I am so tired of wandering around like a lost puppy. Thanks in advance! :)

You cannot overclock the i7 4790 because it's a non-K chip. You want a i7 4790K.

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K - 4.5 GHz | Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO | RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 | SSD: Samsung 850 EVO - 500GB | GPU: MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6GB | PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2 | Case: NZXT Phantom 530 | Cooling: CRYORIG R1 Ultimate | Monitor: ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q | Peripherals: Corsair Vengeance K70 and Razer DeathAdder

It hardly blows the NH-D15 out of the water. At best, it's almost as good.

The PH-TC14PE should barely fit in the Phantom 410.

Why get an aftermarket cooler if you're not oc'ing?

If you're planning a new system , you should probably do it as a whole in the New Builds and Planning subforum.

There's no need to delete the thread. Threads are meant to stay around for future reference.

Looking at your new thread, it seems you're not planning a new system or asking for upgrade recommendations.

If you're just looking to replace the cooler, just do it later. The stock cooler is fine for the cpu. It wouldn't come with it otherwise.

Well the system is new for me as I had AMD FX8350 cpu before that with Gigabyte 990FXA and H100i liquid cooler... however it was running for about 2 months and one day the PC bugged.. black screen, couldn't restart, had to force shut down and after that it wouldn't turn on... That was nearly two years ago and so far I've been running my machine on a crappy i3 intel, some unknown type of motherboard and no real cooler really. Tried replacing parts but seems like everything is dead and in future I might be using the AMD CPU for a second build that will last.

p.s. Thank you for the advice, I will think on it. Still haven't decided on a cooler anyway.

What do you mean by no real cooler?

I'm confused. What system do you currently have?

I am running on the following:

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750W B1 Bronze 80 Semi Modular (from the previous build I was talking about)
Memory:  Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 (from previous build)
GPU: Asus 2GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 650Ti Boost (previous build)
CPU: Intel i3-2120  ..

And a motherboard that I have no idea what type it is since I have that from about 6 years ago when I thought that buying a PC from a store would be a good idea. lolz..

You can find out what motherboard you have with cpu-z.

This is the information you should be putting into the New Builds and Planning thread and you should plan the upgrade as a whole.

Ok so the motherboard is Foxconn 2ADA.. also what do you mean about planning the upgrade as a whole?

You say you have the system with an i3 but you mention the list of specs including an i7. If you're upgrading multiple components, plan it as a whole instead of individually for each component to best utilize your funds.

I only really needed a new CPU, mobo and a cooler since the previous ones burned out. So far I have only spent 350 bucks for the cpu + mobo and now since I won't splurge on a cooler that's another 40 bucks tops. Less than a 400 all together. I just didn't think of mentioning the i3 as I didn't think it was important to since I will be disregarding it from it's existence once I get everything done. I see what you mean though, you're right, I am just trying to explain myself. :)

p.s. I guess I considered it as a "new build" because I could never enjoy completely what I've bought for the first build

Are you sure that it burnt out and it wasn't some other issue?

So you already have the new i7, motherboard, etc?

Might have been other issue but at the time lots of personal stuff prevented me from trying to fix it. Basically the PC wasn't a priority. Time passed, I lost the warranties due to moving to another place, then I kept putting it off and now 2 years later I decided to just build another one. I will try to fix the gigabyte motherboard in couple of months as I will have help from someone else with it so we might be able to make it work.

I don't know.. maybe the main issue was the H100i .. It was running so hot I couldn't keep my finger on it for more than 3 seconds.. I have tested the motherboard with the original heatsink from the AMD processor and all it did was flash a light for less than a second and then die again.

Yes I have bought the new i7 and the new motherboard.

Are your current temps too high or the cooler too loud?

I haven't received them yet. That will happen by mid week next week and I will be done building it then. Was thinking to try the H100i with the new motherboard but then again I am way too scared that something will mess up again..

You should use the stock cooler before preemptively buying a replacement.

Also, there's no reason to get such an expensive cooler for a locked cpu.

Its a very good cooler, but i´m not sure if it fits in the Phantom 410 case.

It most likely wouldn't fit in, the case just looks spacious before you start putting all your things inside lol. It also feels like a cheap plastic which I don't like... I definitely need a full tower one regardless if I will be getting the Phanteks or something else, but tbh for now I will probably go for something not so expensive like the Cryorig H7 or H5.

Yeah, also on my other thread Zyndo helped quite a bit with my choice. It looks like I was on the right path and then I thought I'm not so I continued reading reviews and got to the point of thinking that I will have to buy an expensive one and so on. Glad I decided to talk to you guys first though.

Hahaha I love that! Proved me wrong straight up. :D Glad to know it works.

To your first question. I am planning on streaming 7-8 hours a day or so, recording constantly etc so I want to make sure everything will be kept cool and will handle the pressure is all. Plus 40 bucks isn't that much to spend on a better cooler in my book.

p.s. That makes me think I wouldn't need a new case either. I will save up the cash probably as I think the H7 is smaller than the Phanteks so it would be waste of money I suppose.

Pressure?

The stock cooler should do fine. The main reason to replace the cooler would either be to lower noise or for looks.

Okay. I guess I will see how it'll work with the stock cooler first and then if I'm not happy I will be looking at other options..  I'm pushing so bad for the cooling part because of what happened to me before. Just don't want history repeating itself.
