Your drive might be going apeshit, and is going through error correction trying to write the files.

Go  to my computer right click on your hdd.

Hit properties

Hit tools

Under Error Checking hit Check

Voila, it should do a good job at telling you about the integrity of your hdd and if it needs to be replaced.

Got a similar (in that it's corrupted) problem with my old HDD (WD Blue 500gb). I accidentally unplugged the sata power cable while it was still running Problem is, the bios can't detect it at all. I'm using a backup 320 gig. Is there a way to recover that 500gb?

You can recover the drive using some file recovery software, like RecoverMyFiles. Though milage varies.

Codename: Project Stealth. See profile for specs.

Do you have a particular program still open while you power down the pc? Windows closes all programs during shutdown, it could be that one particular program is taking a VERY long time to close.

If your system isnt detecting it, plug it into another system if you have one handy. What operating system are you using? Do you have any other hard drives in that system?

Yeah I have a 320GB running right now on the same sata port. The 500gb HDD sounds fine when it spins up. I don't hear any clicking sound.

Yea, I would suggest plugging it into another computer to see if its detected. If its not, then the HD might be shot. I know this can be done in Windows 8, not sure about windows 7, but probably. If you have no other machine, you could take it into something like a best buy where they could quickly plug it into a machine and tell you if its the hard drive or not.
