What happens if the fan of the powersupply fails, and the psu gets to hot? Will it catch fire or something?

Not really, but can be dangerous if the PSU runs hot even with a fan

most higher end psus have a temperature shutoff. So if your power supply gets to hot, or it starts over drawing watts from the wall, it will shut off.

yeah it will prob overheat and either:

1) take something with it

2) take everything with it

or 3) Get lucky and not have it kill anything.

But if you NEED it working for a bit you can screw a case fan where the dead fan is, plug it into molex and hope for the best

If it's a dodgy unit though hoping the protection built into it works and shuts it off but yeah not recommended to get those units.

Quality power supplies have OTP (over temperature protection) - when the temperature inside goes above a threshold the power supply shuts off.  Usually a thermal sensor is installed on something that gets most hot, like the transformer or the heatsink on the secondary side.

Cheap power supplies don't have such protections. If certain integrated circuits overheat, like the transistors or mosfets on the primary side, they'll blow up and then there's a small chance of fire or at least making some smoke. When those blow up, it's possible to have higher voltage than normal on secondary side for a second or more and that could damage components, but if the power supply has some kind of over voltage protection and the protection kicks in fast enough, your pc will be safe.

If some diodes or mosfets end up damaged on the secondary side, they short out (in case of diodes) or blow up, in which case the most common result is the lack of voltage and the power supply should turn itself off.

If a power supply runs for long time without fan but yet the temperature increase is not enough to blow up integrated circuits (which usually can survive up to 125C and even more), capacitors will be the next components affected. With increased temperatures, they'll dry up and degrade, so in time the power supply's output will be "wobbly", you'll get lousy voltage regulation and when you're in games, the pc may reset itself due to output voltage dropping below minimum certain voltages.

I actually had the fan in my powersupply fail one a few weeks ago. Only way I found out was while gaming my computer would suddenly just shut off after a while, and not turn itself back on.

was able to remedy the situation by simply flipping the fan side up on the power supply, and placing a spare case fan on top to pull air through the power supply and into my case. Did that for a week or so until I found the time to tear it apart and replace the fan on the inside; it ran just fine with that super ghetto setup though, probably could have just left it.

I feel like not enough people are brave enough to solder the old fan's connection into a new fan :D

I'd do it, if my PSU fan failed and was out of warranty. I could even upgrade the fan.

Well, the top mounted fan was literally just a 3p fan connector, no soldering required.

You can connect it to the motherboard sure, but that's less elegant. When an uninformed observer can't tell that you changed your PSU fan, that's pretty value

No, the internal connector for the fan inside the power supply was a 3pin connector. Simply unplugged it, and plugged in the new fan to the power supply main board itself.
