Upgrade from FX 4350 to FX-8350?

So I just sold my buddy my GTX 980 Ti for $325 USD. He's coming from a 6870 and its quite ancient. Also sold him my old 2560x1080p monitor for $150. So far hes enjoying it but hes running on a FX 4350 that we OC'd to 5ghz back in 2012. Still its a pretty significant bottleneck. Especially in games like Elder Scrolls Online.  I am wondering if him upgrading to an FX 8350 would be worth it? I know its a dead board but for $149 at our local retailer its a decent price. However, on the flip side he can afford an I5 6400 with a new mobo and 8GB of DDR4, its just at the high end of his budget. 

 

Right now I am heavily leaning toward him pushing for the I5 as it will really free up the 980 Ti for better performance. Let me know what yall think.

I would also go for the I5.

Or a third option: get a new 1151 motherboard for him but get a second hand 6400. It will save you some cash so it's not at the high end of his budget and it's actually fairly difficult to get a bad chip second hand, unlike a mobo which can be more of an issue.

As an FX8350 user, I suggest you go to an i5.

 

CPU - Intel i5-6400

Used Phenom II X6 1100T(if you don't want to spend much) or upgrade to a i5. You can probably hunt around /r/hardwareswap to get i7 combo for 400-450 or so.

The i5 is the better option. He'd make the money back on the power savings and NVIDIA cards don't make use of multi core processors well anyway like AMD ones do. Especially the obsolete 900 series and older.

This was gonna be my plan but he said he would buy my used I7-2600k from me and the mobo for $200 just this second. I basically sold him my entire old PC.

Was it bad? Ive had a few friends who rolled with FX chips in 2012 and by the time 2015 rolled around couldnt stand them anymore.

i suggested intel because of power consumption and heat that came from my experience. :)

I think so. The 2600k OC'd to 4.2ghz is pretty close to a stock 4770k in gaming. At least that is what I have seen. I thought it was cool also as he loves gaming just does not make a ton of money. I just got a pretty sweet promotion at work so I did my entire PC re-build.  Need those sweet cores of the 6800k to deal with all my VMs running.

i had it for 4 months...it was already chocking a GTX 780 in many games...a 980ti you say?! unles you want to do 4K 30FPS on this it's really not a good match.

CPU is slow for gaming.

Yeah, the FX-6300 series was the only one I recommended to friends back then as it seemed to be good for budget builds.  We built ours when we were poor college students  who wanted to play SWTOR.

for the price the FX-6300 is/was decent...but nowadays there is no upgrade path with that...and in most games even an i3-6100 will provide better results while consuming less power...offering modern comodities such as PCIe3.0 namely...DDR4 ram...and an upgrade path to an i5 or i7...those CPU's are from another era...they perform well in multi-threaded applications...but fall short in games...at least when paired with higher-end cards...they are great if you match them with say a GTX 960 or R9 380 for example and play a mix of medium and high settings for example...but if you aim for more, i think you should pretty much avoid them.

 

The single-threaded performance is lacking and it hurt the performance in many titles...even multi-threaded games still require a fair bit of single-threaded performance for the main threads of the game engine...you can only be as fast as your fastest processing core most of the time..and AMD's fastest processing core really ain't that fast when compared to current modern intel cpu's...even when compared to CPU's from it's era (sandy-bridge) those AM3+ chips were already falling way behind in that department...today you're looking at like half the potential single-threaded performance when compaired to even a locked skylake core i5 chip.. :(

Yeah it was driven by price back then. I went overboard with my initial processor, I7-2600k, but that was mainly because I was a Computer Science major and wanted something high end. Glad I did as that processor lasted me for years with no bottleneck.  After that and the mobo I could only afford an AMD 6870 but still coming from the PS3 it was night and day.

Elder Scrolls Online uses much CPU usage on one core unlike Skyrim, the best fix is to reduce view distance to 25! :) (doubt FX will be better for ESO)

My friend who have a i7-6700K + 980Ti told me he also was forced to have 25 in view distance also, so I am not sure a CPU upgrade will do much... :(
