So I used to have a 4670k for two years, couldn't get it past 4.2Ghz regardless of voltage, thought I just had a bad chip and left it

Recently I have sold it and moved onto a 4770k, thinking maybe I would have different luck I am here again stuck at a max of 4.2Ghz, however having two chips stuck has led me to believe its more than just my unlucky silcion lottery

I cannot get the system to be stable unless its all stock settings or at 1.25V. 1.249 will BSOD, 1.251 BSOD. Only 1.25V works and I can't get it past 4.2Ghz

What else could be causing my problem or am I just unlucky twice? Specs are listed next to name.

SPECS:

Spoiler

  • CPU
    i5-4770k @ 4.2GHz
  • Motherboard
    Asus Z87i-Pro
  • RAM
    16GB Corsair 2400Mhz
  • PSU
    OCZ 650W

What motherboard are you using. Normally I wouldn't ask this but this is definitely a motherboard issue

Listed in the post, but Z87i pro, has its own VRM section when I bought it thinking it would allow good amount of OC'ing

Doesnt get over 65C, cooled by a H100.

Well the only possible issue (besides having really bad luck) could be with power regulation of your board but it seems to have numerous power phases so unless something is defective with it, or there is some other power related issue it's just your bad luck.

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/631048-psu-tier-list-updated/ Tier Breakdown (My understanding)--1 Godly, 2 Great, 3 Good, 4 Average, 5 Meh, 6 Bad, 7 Awful

Sorry didn't see the specs tab, on my phone. Anyways sounds like a bad mobo.

I have a feeling it could be my PSU or motherboard but I wanted to ask first, when I sold my 4670k the buyer for 4.4Ghz at a lower voltage right away. I bought this motherboard based just on the good VRM solution, reviewers get 4.7Ghz easily.

It should be easy 4.6Ghz on a high voltage like 1.35 but insta BSOD.

Even known good products/companies will sometime have defects. Asus, while a reputable company will make a defective product eventually. That said, OCZ isn't known for great psu. As power supplies are typically cheaper than mobos I'd try a different power supply first.

If that didn't work, I'd try a new mobo. I'm thinking you probably have a bad vrm somewhere on your motherboard.

Even if it was the PSU or motherboard, I am not in the situation where it makes sense to purchase a new one of each, the both work fine atm (minus the obv reason for this thread) and I don't really need much more speed over 4.2.

But thanks for the comments.

1. Bad cooling.

2. Bad motherboard.

3. Lack of Power.

4. You've lost the silicon lottery. Twice.

1. H100 is more than good enough

2. It shouldn't be bad, but could be slightly faulty.

3. What I am thinking is the problem

4. ):

Update your bios

I have the Deluxe version of that board, can't help you verify if it's your board. Can't OC too, running a Xeon.
