You can use one of these to connect your headphones straight into the RCA sockets on the TV (assuming your TV is connected to the xbox via HDMI), but the sound won't exactly be loud due to no amp.

Or you can use a  Xbox 360 Audio Adapter Cable, to be able to connect your headphones into the xbox it's self

Then use the cable linked at the start of this post to plug in your headphones.

You'll need a DAC for that. I know Gefen used to make a small one, that you could use.

Edit: I found it: http://www.gefen.com/kvm/gtv-digaud-2-aaud.jsp?prod_id=5279 Unfortunatly you would need a RCA to female 3.5mm jack to make it work.

Hello.

Optical is digital and 3.5mm is analog. Therefore you can't get a simple adapter for it, you will need a DAC and AMP. I have an AV receiver that accepts optical SPDIF as a input and can output the signal to speakers or to headphones.

It's called an AV receiver, but its designed for home theater surround sound. If you already have one than you can hook it up to that. If not I don't think its worth getting one just to use it as a SPDIF to 3.5mm converter. I would look for a smaller and cheaper option.

the onboard of my torrenting pc died so I bought this cheapass thing to replace it.

at the time it was only 20 something dollars including shipping. it requires it to be hooked to a pc it might be a bit clunky for your use but its a cheapass option

They are two different digital signals. An optical cable works with light, while a USB works with a bit stream. You can buy USB to optical converters, but they are quite expensive.

no i don't have one, it didn't come with it, otherwise it'd still be in my xbox-box :9

@helping so I'd need one of those+ a fiio e10 or something, or like a dac+headphone amp combo with a optical input

no not an e10, any plain old headphone amp, something like an e5 would do.

you're going from digital to standard, so a digital amp would be useless. get a composite to RCA audio jack converter, put a headphone amplifier on the end of that.

or just find some piece of crap receiver or stereo 2nd hand that would pretty much cost the same if not less with similar sound.

So that, then just plug in the line-out on the dac to the amp, headphones into the amp, and i'm golden?

yep, should be good. The e5 is rechargeable battery powered, it was an arbitrary suggestion, get whatever amp you want.
