A buddy is replacing his PC...

Umm not that I am planning to build a PC myself or anything but a guy I know who has a i7-4790K and a GTX 980 is buying a new pre-built with a i7-6800K and a GTX 1080, is his upgrade worth it or is it a waste of money? (I did tell him upgrade would be better but yeah he is a lazy ass and he want a new PC...) Other upgrades is a 850 Evo and a SSHD 2TB for storage... (he may also remove his old HDD using it for extra storage before selling his old PC...)

 

BTW: I am sure he only upgraded to brag he got a better PC than our other friend who has a i7-6700K + GTX 980Ti...

He is also planning to stream all games at 60fps which the i7-4790K and GTX 980 combo could not in some games...

Objectively, most prebuilts are a 'waste of money'. Unless he's doing some heavy rendering, running VRMs, animation etc, there's really no reason to upgrade to a i7 6800K from the i7 4790K.

He did complain that GTA V was not able to max out on the GTX 980 and that he could not stream it in 60fps...

Sounds like the only thing that needs upgrading is the GPU. Tell him to be smart with his money.

I did tell him but he never listens, probably because men think women have no clue on computers? Then again he did mention his Windows glitch a lot (last time his mouse would not function on his second screen and I told him to re-install the driver but that only fixed it temporarily) and I told him he should buy a SSD and re-install windows on that but he does not know how to do that. I do but I am not sure if or how to extract his old PCs OEM license or even if it is re-usable. Not to mention the store he buy the PCs from (Komplett) even has a custom boot image each time you boot the PC and I am not sure what kinda stuff they do to the PCs mobo and Windows... o3o

If he uses anything that actually benefits from having 12 threads and feels that the difference of 4 threads is worth the cost, then it's not a waste of money. It might be meaningful in something that's actually CPU-bound and uses a lot of threads, such as exporting, encoding, and other nice stuff, but probably not by much, of course.

 

Otherwise, in gaming, he might get a few meaningless frames in a game like GTA V, and at worst, he'll actually lose a few frames due to the i7-4790K running faster and cooler.

 

As for the GPU, I'd consider that a good upgrade if he's into ultra 1440p or entry-level 4K gaming with a single card.

I still haven't got clarification, but Linus mentioned in a video that very very few things he has come into contact with use more than 8, but he may have meant full cores. Hard to tell because he was flopping between mentioning cores and threads and said one when he meant the other at least once in the same bit so...?

He plays GTA V and well he still plays at 1080p yet he says 980 could not max out GTA V...

(my 970 could not max out GTA V so I guess its right...)

There's definitely going to be a point of diminishing returns here. You might see all 12 threads get used equally in synthetic benchmarks, but many programs... not so much.

 

He most likely meant threads. The benefits of having multiple logical processors means the processor can do more things in parallel, as threads are what are actually being scheduled with in the operating system. That said, each physical core has a finite amount of resources, which is why more cores can be more important than more threads (e.g. i5 vs i3). Hope this clears anything up!

Hmm... sounds like a modified copy of Windows that's gone haywire. Installing a new copy will rid the propriety logos and bloatware that come with prebuilts. Your idea of buying a new SSD and a copy of Windows sounds good. You could also transfer your copy of Windows by simply calling Microsoft since it's, in a sense, not tied to your motherboard.

 

More GPU power sounds like the way to go to get the framerates he wants for GTA V. If he doesn't listen, show him this thread.

Well I agree but he have already ordered it! (it is a sweet rig tough I only have a FX-8370 and a GTX 970...)
