To the OP, looks like a Core 2 Duo, the first gen Core i7 mobile either is quad core or dual core with a seperate GPU die

Hmm, interesting. The thing is, I owned three 20" laptops. One had a first gen i7, and one indeed had a Core 2 Duo. You must be right, and I got confused ;)

 

 

i have an old CPU sitting around and i'm going to turn it into a keyPU but i don't know whether to remove the heat spreader

 

EDIT: or make two :)

 

I'd say if you can drill through the heat spreader, go for it, it look really cool from seeing some of the previous posts.

Most of the ones in this thread have drilled through the wrong side first.

 

Drill from the top down and it wont ruin the metalic foil surface of the cpu, and use a centerpunch if the cpu youre using has a heat spreader still atattched.
