HE-400i vs TH500RP

Pankaic

Hey everyone, I'm deciding between the two headphones mentioned in the title. I found deals for both at $275 and $270 respectively. For anyone who's had the opportunity to listen to both, which would you recommend? I'm getting them for my dad, who primarily listens to, as Linus calls it, Top-40 trash.

Also, what amps would go well with each? I'd say my budget is approx. $400, which leaves only about $125-130 for an amp (not much, unfortunately). I know the TH500RP needs a lot of juice to power, so even if I purchase them, would I be able to buy anything good enough with my budget? As for the HE-400i, would a budget dac/amp combo be fine since it's not that power hungry? (Something like the Fulla, SD793-II, or E10k)

Any help and recommendations/suggestions appreciated!

I thought you said T50RP at first but then saw there was an extra H and 0.

Well the 400i definitely measures better than those TH500RP. Fostex basically took the T50RP drivers and put them in an open TH-900 housing.

The 400i are 93dB/(mw?), so it's kinda is hard to drive but could probably get away if your motherboard is pretty decent like a Z or X board.

Try it and if it's not loud enough there's the Magni 2 B-stock for like $90.

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M
