Im sure many of you are familiar with being the techy person of the family.

I am. I finally get everything done, cauhht up.

Today my grandma calls and asks me about upgrading her laptop to Windows 10. Sure no problem.

Then both my uncles call about the same thing, and my mom.

Ive got 4 laptops running slowly churning away at downloading and installing Windows 10.

The sad part, it took my 6700k 15 minutes to install 10, 1 hour in and the best laptop is still only at 34%. Time to break out the vodka and see which will happen first.

I get drunk or one of these 4 finally get windows 10 installed.

The best performer of the bunch has an i3. The rest are all AMD A8s.

My grandma bought hers, my moms and uncles at the same time. So they're identical Dells. My other uncle has the i3.

Kill me now, im surrounded by slow laptops with inferior CPUs.

Meanwhile, im also installing 10 on my gfs new 6600k and its almost done completely.

I can feel your pain, thankfully many of the computers I maintain now are ones built by myself, so plenty of i3 and i5's with SSDs and a good chunk of RAM.  Some are just email and Netflix workstations.

PC - NZXT H510 Elite, Ryzen 5600, 16GB DDR3200 2x8GB, EVGA 3070 FTW3 Ultra, Asus VG278HQ 165hz,

Mac - 1.4ghz i5, 4GB DDR3 1600mhz, Intel HD 5000.  x2

Endlessly wishing for a BBQ in space.

Just a heads up. Laptop ULV i3s are actually slower than the A8s from the 6000/7000/8000 series. Food for thought :P

I'm not a laptop person.

I've got one but my gf uses it more than me. I'm just used to the desktop line of processors.

Plus they're laptops. Nowadays, it's a throwaway device. Use it until it's junk and buy a new one.

Yea I'll stick to cpu's that need the delicate drop into the socket, vs the cpu's you sit on your lap and wait for your "chestnuts to roast on an open fire"

Lol, my laptop has both of those, my laptop also has an a10 cpu in it, and it didn't take too long to upgrade it since I put an ssd in it.

Yea, I put an SSD into my laptop just because it supported 2 2.5 inch drives. So 1 SSD and 1 HD.

These aren't mine and their normal owners wouldn't understand an SSD, more less the price for something that hides in a laptop.

My grandma has the patience to deal with this slow ass laptop. Literally, open browser, wait 30 seconds, then type into the search bar. I'm used to open browser, while it's loading webpage, type into search bar.

So you downloading 10 through windows updates?

Run from disc, saves download time.

That's assuming someone has a disc copy of 10 or on a USB stick drive.  Not everyone does.  So unless they already have that they'd have to download 10 anyway regardless of how it's downloaded and installed.

Really?  I never knew there were any laptops with upgradable CPUs.  That's cool.

Can you think of an example?  Is there a way to tell if a laptop CPU is upgradable or would you have to check on a case by case basis?

Any CPU ending in "M" is socketed and upgradeable - and then there are those which use desktop sockets and desktop CPUs.

Examples? i7 3630QM, i7 2630QM, i7 4700MQ and etc

I think my old Sager laptop has an i7-920XM.  So that would be upgradable?  How would I know what I could replace it with?  Like the socket I mean.  Or would there possibly be other restrictions from my laptop's mb?

For that matter would there even be a point to upgrading the CPU?  It's got a GTX 285M 1GB I think so not much good for demanding games anymore regardless of CPU.

I can relate to being the family tech support. What a thankless job. Having installed Windows 10 on both my mom and dad's computers it gives me a new appreciation for my beefy desktop and laptop. I don't know how they deal with such slow machines on a daily basis. I'm talking click on File Explorer and wait 5-10 seconds slow. Also, I've never met anyone who can bork a computer like my Dad. It's something new every couple weeks :P

Oh.  Duh.  I forget to look there..  lol

Would I have to worry about any issues with the laptop mb?  Sometimes they need updates to use newer CPUs and I've never tried to update the bios.  Idk if it even can be on a laptop.  I've only ever updated the bios on my main desktop and Maybd my secondary one both of which I got/built in the last 6 months or so.

Would you happen to know what that "ark" thing means for the Intel site?  I've always wondered why it was called that.

You only have to check if your laptop can handle the heat and power draw.

As for XP - PirateBay is also illegal in a sense so while I personally don't endorse it, you CAN get XP from there
