I'm thinking of buying a refurbished workstation to run vm's and test stuff. Will prolly install ESXI on it

I can buy a HP Z400 with following specs for € 295

Quad Core Intel Xeon X5550 2.66-3.06GHz 8 Threads
RAM 12 GB
Harddisk 500GB SATA
DVDReWriter
GPU NVS-295 2 x DisplayPort
8 x USB 2.0
Lan 10/100/1000 Mbps
Refurbished with 2 years warrany

OR

A HP Z600 with following specs for € 429

 2x Intel Xeon E5620 2.4-2.66 Ghz - 16 Threads
- RAM 16GB
- Harddisk 500 GB
- Optical DVDReWriter
- GPU FX-1800 dvi + 2 x displayPort
- 2 x Gigabit Lan
- Refurbished
- 2 years warranty

Which one should I buy?

I'm not going to run heavily used VM's on it.

Just a VPN, webserver, and testvm's for WS16 and linux etc.

id say the z600 is the better buy, plus if you do end up using it as a heavy work machine buy 2 x5650s and upgrade to 12 cores 24 threads

The Z600. It is faster, plus it has 2 CPUs.

definitely get the z600. It is far better, over double the CPU power.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. If I add €50 I can get 32 GB ECC ram in the Z600. Worth it?

And does anyone know howmuch power this approximately will draw from the wall?

Does the 32GB ECC RAM come with a warranty? Most new RAM come with lifetime warranties. If so, I'd say go for it.

As for power draw? Idle, probably under 100w. Full load? Could be upwards of 500w.

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

iPhone Xr 128 GB Product Red - HP Spectre x360 13" (i5 - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD) - HP ZBook 15v G5 15" (i7-8850H - 16 GB RAM - 512 GB SSD - NVIDIA Quadro P600)

Well it's all refurbished so I guess the 32GB will have warranty as well.

For the power draw, well I think I'll be running 2 VM's all the time (VPN and webserver) and the others on occasion so I'm good there I guess

If you want a server, id get a dell r710 or a hp dl380. There much faster and support much more ram and storage. There also cheaper on ebay.

Well thanks for your advise bit I'm not going to buy a full size server. The workstation would be good enough for what I'm going to do with it also the shop where I'm buying it from gives me 2 years of warranty. So if anything breaks I just have to send it back. These machines are tested and fully working. Not all servers on ebay are fully tested nor give me 2 years of warranty. Besides I have no space to put a full size server. What am I supposed to do with it? lay it under my desk or buy an additional rack for a single server?
