If you're not really limited by money I don't see a problem with going with a 5820K.

Other than that, 4790K or go broke.

Really depends on the usage. For gaming, the i7 4790k/6700k are more than enough, even in games taking advantage of more cores. And even when taking accounts the better optimization of DX12 for multi-core CPUs, single threaded performance and clock speed are still the most important things for gaming. You will not see improvement with a 5820k over the two others in gaming. And if you don't overclock it substantially, you might even get worse performance.

But for video editing, programming and all multi threaded tasks, yeah, the 5820k will be better. But the extra money isn't justifiable for gaming only

CPU : i7 8700k @5GHz, GPU : ASUS GTX 1080 Ti STRIX, RAM : 2x8Go 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance, MB : ASUS Prime Z370-A, PSU : CM V850, Case :  NZXT S340, CPU Cooler : NZXT Kraken x62, Monitor : Acer Predator XB271HU 27" 1440p 165Hz, OS : Windows 10 Home 64 bits

Gaming laptop: ASUS GL552VW: i7 6700HQ - GTX960M 2GB - 8GB DDR4 2166Mhz RAM - 1TB 7200RPM HDD

I have the 4790k and am really happy with it. CPU heavy games like Arma 3, GTA V and weirdly Rainbow Six Siege all run really smoothly.

Can get a bit warm though, so I would recommend a good cooler.

CPU: i7 4790K @ 4.5ghz | Mobo: Asus B85MG | RAM: Corsair Vengence 16GB 1600Mhz | GPU: R9 390X

SSD: Kingston 240GB | PSU: Corsair CXM 600W | Case: CIT Dominator + 6 Corsair AF120 Fans all around |

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master TX3 | Monitor: BenQ XL2730z 144Mhz 1440p |

Keyboard: Corsair STRAFE | Mouse: Razer DeatherAdder Chroma

Oh.. and what mobo and GPU?

Seems like you shouldn't be upgrading your CPU right now. Feels as if you'd benefit more from a GPU upgrade or waiting a little bit for Zen / Kaby rather than going new right now.
