They said 40% increase in performace but did they mean over older amd cpus or over Intel cpus (core based cpus no xeon and so on)

What do you think or know??

It's compared to older amd cpus, specifically the am3+ line also know as piledriver

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/631048-psu-tier-list-updated/ Tier Breakdown (My understanding)--1 Godly, 2 Great, 3 Good, 4 Average, 5 Meh, 6 Bad, 7 Awful

*40% increase in IPC over AMD's Excavator IIRC. People have been speculating it to have performance ranging from Sandy Bridge all the way to Haswell. We'll have to sit tight and see how it turns out.

Over Piledriver. Pretty much the math is this:

Ivy Bridge<Zen<Haswell

Athlon X2 for only 27.31$   Best part lists at different price points   Windows 1.01 running natively on an Eee PC

If this holds true and they can kill it with over clock ability and lower cost in comparison to Skylake, then they'll have a winner here.

I'd gladly upgrade to an 8/16 Zen if the cost of the platform was $100~ less than going with a Skylake 6700k

If we use DDR3. Factor in DDR4 and Zen may pull out ahead. DF did a test on DDR3 vs DDR4 and there was a 10% difference IIRC

Single core performance-wise, I'd say extremely likely. I don't see AMD putting out something that'll rival Skylake.

Its a 40% IPC improvement over excavator.  You have to remember that IPC != performance.  If zen has a 40% ipc improvement,  but can only run at 3ghz,  this won't help much

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Then again. We have 8-cores and 16-thread confirmed

It will have a low clock speed out of the box, 2.8 GHz turbo'ing to 3.2 GHz according to this:

Obviously, take this with a huge grain of salt.

But, I do think you'll have to OC them to be competitive with haswell IPC, but you'll also have more cores. So overall, it should be fairly competitive.

4 core variant ~= lock i5

8core variant ~= x99

These are engineering samples,  ao they are subject to change  when skylake engineering samples were leaked they ran at 2.5ghz

Not sure if you didn't read the post..

Anyways, comparing how Intel does things to AMD holds no water either

True,  but engineering samples from both sides are generally underclocked
