I've just replaced the thermal compound on my CPU (i7 3770k - Corsair H100i) and my temps are a bit weird. Right now it is running at an average temp of 40 but just a few minutes ago all 4 cores were jumping up to 80 then going back down immediately. Is this bad or could I just chalk it up to programs running and the PC starting?

check your cooler is on correctly.

I checked that each side was evenly tight when I screwed it into the motherboard. Does it have to be oriented a certain way ex. "This side up"? I doubt it. Other than that I don't have much else to blame except for the thermal paste. I put a small dot about the size of the the capacitors on聽the motherboard. Should I have put more in a dot or even a line or X?

You can never put on too much, only not enough. Refer to your CPU coolers guide to see how tight they suggest to screw it down.

amount of themal paste doesn't matter.

keep in mind that thermal paste takes some time to set, and doesn't reach optimal performance until it has been used for a whille
