I am planning to get a gtx 1060 but worried that it would bottleneck my i7 920 i currently have an amd 5700 series

Comparing side by side you would have noticeable impact on performance but if you don't have the money to throw out the window I can tell you that the experience will probably still be pretty fun :)

You WILL see a bottleneck. If you can, upgrade. If you can't, endure.

to be honest i don't know exactly what is a bottleneck and what exactly causes it i know it is something that has to do with gpu and cpu :/

It means your GPU won't be performing as good as it should be because your CPU (or other component) is at its limits

so it is going to affect the frame rates? (i don't care as long as it is above 60 or 30 high settings in most games)

edit am expecting the performance would be of a 980

all that will happen is that in CPU heavy games you will get much less performance than youre meant to be getting out of the 1060

its not going to invaildate your purchase, just wont be getting the full performance out of it.

It should be fine if it's at 3.8ghz or higher.

Not only. A CPU bottleneck usually results in stutter (lag spikes) and it's frustrating.

E5640 is the XEON version of the i7 920 with a larger L3 cache, it's about 1% faster per clock speed so basically apples to apples.

i7 920 at 4ghz or higher is not bottle necking anything under a GTX 1080.

So an 8350 can run a 1070 without bottlenecking? Cause an 8350 is quite a bit faster than an OCed i7 920

Come again?

Vishera is a lot slower per core vs Nehalem.

I was not born yesterday.

Vishera is far slower per clock.

According to that the 8320 (lower clocked than 8350) is the same in single thread and crushing in multi-thread. A 2010 Intel CPU gets hammered a by 2013 AMD one. Simple really

Vishera also scales MUCH better and OCs further. A 4GHz Nahalem CPU was already beyond 200W whereas Vishera at 4GHz is at 125W

8320 is above 5ghz, the Nehalem is at 4.2ghz.

Yet you tell everyone here, Vishera is much faster per clock, in single thread the FX loses to Nehalem, and this translates to gaming.

It DID - in 2012. Now MC is more important as evident by the fact that games use more and more cores

This is correct, so why is the XEON in the video's i put above keeping up with Haswell in the multi core games?

*Cough* OP, you'll be fine for that performance tier, depending on your use scenarios (games / applications). If it's within your budget, a CPU upgrade may be in order at some point, but it may cost you especially if you migrate to skylake and beyond (Motherboard, CPU, RAM). Ideally, as usual, you want the best GPU you can buy at the time, but given that the 920 is getting pretty long in the tooth, it's a bit of a rough spot.
