I know what you're thinking, you're spending like $1200 on a laptop and are considering buying a 12" MacBook with one USB C port - WTF?!

Here's the thing, I want a portable laptop I can edit videos on, 1080p and 4K whilst on the move (source:

I wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything major, is there another laptop, that I can CHARGE with USB type C, for roughly the same price, and roughly the same size and form factor that is capable of editing. The issue I've found so far with trying to find a compelling alternative is that if I go the 'non macbook' route I'd have to get something with considerably more powerful due to the fact that Premiere Pro is not half as well optimised as FCP X.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, however!

Thanks,

James :D

I don't have much experience with laptops of that size, however the razer blade stealth comes to mind when I think of a macbook 12" alternative with a bit more grunt for video editing. Believe it comes with a low voltage i7 as oppose to the core m in the macbook, so cpu performance should be better. The base 1440p model should be a little less than the macbook.

Cpu: Ryzen 2700 @ 4.0Ghz | Motherboard: Hero VI x370 | Gpu: EVGA RTX 2080 | Cooler: Custom Water loop | Ram: 16GB Trident Z 3000MHz

PSU: RM650x + Braided cables | Case:  painted Corsair c70 | Monitor: MSI 1440p 144hz VA | Drives: 500GB 850 Evo (OS)

Laptop: 2014 Razer blade 14" Desktop: http://imgur.com/AQZh2sj , http://imgur.com/ukAXerd

Xps 13 and razer blade, although I would go with the razer blade as you can get an i7 for far less than the Dell even for the same chip. Although I'm not entirely sure if you can charge over usb on the blade. I too wish to charge my laptop off a usb battery bank xD

I think the blade stealth will work for you.

Listen to exactly nobody in this thread. If you need to video edit on the fly that or a MBP would be the best choice. On the condition that it's final cut pro. Very major condition. What you said is 100% correct and more accurate than any suggestions provided in the thread so far. The 2016 Macbook is a decent option for your use case, but may I suggest waiting till the 2016 MBP versions. If price is a non-starter then the cheaper $1200 Macbook will be your best bet.

Be very very clear here that the express purpose of the Macbook will be to video edit and do extremely basic tasks such as web browsing and office. Anything that isn't a proprietary OSX app (like Final Cut) will not work smooth such as macro heavy excel or photoshop. Hence the suggestion for a MBP for those other tasks.

That's the thing, the Blade can't be charged via USB, and those who managed have had to use very specific methods - I have a specific use case and want little hassle. I came back to this thread to reply to those suggesting other options. I already own a MBP Pro 15" (which '#PCMasterrace' slaughter me for all the time, but I also have a Fury and 6800K so.... xD), I just want something smaller that I can use for editing, that's literally it and the Macbook looks to be what I'm going to grab. FCP X isn't my favourite editing program, but it works and does all that I need to do, so I suppose that's a compromise I'm going to have to make.

I'm going to wait until the next gen if I can, hopefully they'll add in another USB C port.

Thanks for the help man - really appreciate it.

What? The only way the blade stealth can be charged is through the usb type c port...

DON'T LOOK AT THAT PEICE OF SHIT.

I am amazed of how shitty Razer could make a laptop.

1. Thermal throttleling, so it gets very very hot and it has a shorter life spand than other laptops

2. Build "quality", if you even can call it quality, it is so bad that it competes with cheap acer laptops, sure they use nice materials, but a 4 year old could put them better together.

3. "quality control", I don't think that they have heard of that at razer, you might get one that is okay, but you might also get one you need to RMA from day one.

4. "Support" kek, those idiots are really stupid and slow, they should get fired and never be able to get a job there again.

5. Keyboard, the keyboard is something you would expect on a 600$ laptop, not a 2000$ laptop

All in all, a razer blade is like buying a Acer laptop CANCER.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M
