Hi there, I am looking to upgrade my Cryorig H5 as it reached 95celcius most of the time and for Xeon that is way too high.

I am in debate of a Noctua NH-D15 or the NZXT X61..

The Xeon is overclocked too, so that's why it reached 95celcius most of the time.

I also heard that AIO Coolers could leak and or the liquid will sublimate. Is it true?

So.. Between the two coolers, which one has better cooling performance over time?

They could leak, but so could a custom loop.

Not sure how that's relevant. An AIO is much less likely since there's only two tubes and quite honestly I trust the manufacturer more than most PC builders to make a leak-free cooling system.

The H5 is a pretty decent cooler, so unless you absolutely need that OC I think you might have just pushed it too hard. I wouldn't go over 85 degrees in an AIDA64 stress test at the very max. What's your OC, and what Xeon?

Its an old Xeon, an X5460 overclocked to 4.1GHz from base clock of 3.1GHz so that's a 1GHz overclock.

Yes, I need the overclock since if it runs at stock speed it takes much longer to render stuff.

Try a much more modest overclock and see how well it does. Ultimately you're just going to be lowering the voltage so see what the highest frequency is you can get out of a voltage peaking at 85 degrees under load.

If you desperately want water cooling the X61 or H100i GTX are good choices.

Extremely rare for a AIO liquid cooler to leak. The Noctua NH-D15 will have less points of failure but the Kraken X61 will cool better. In the end, it's up to you. You're basically comparing the best air cooler with the best AIO liquid cooler.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, both of them are basically the best in their own league (air and water) so I was looking out which one will win.

Oh, my ambient temperature can't go lower than 26celcius and that is way too hot for air cooling I think. And that might be the reason my H5 is pretty defective.

It will only BSOD if you keep your frequency that high. That's why I'm saying to go to a safer voltage (1.31v) and set your frequency from there.

Here's the issue: the NH-D15 is the gold standard of air cooling. That said, it's only a few degrees better than the H5 Ultimate. If you're at 95C with the H5, even a D15 won't get you below 88-90 at best. A powerhouse AIO like the Kraken X61 could bring you down some more, but honestly, your best bet is just to dial back the OC and bring your voltage down. Better to lose 200MHz now than burn your chip out in a year, right?

You might want to try reseating your H5 with new paste. Might just be mounted incorrectly. And, dumb question, are you sure you took the plastic off of the heatsink before affixing it?

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Followed your instructions and turn down the voltage to 1.31v and 3.8GHz is all I can get. Yes, I'm currently running it with a max. temps sitting at 89C.

Seriously? I mean, the ambient temperature here is just way too hot for Air Cooling I think. I've just recently changed the OC settings and changed the fans on the H5 to somewhat if not better Noctua NF-A14-iPPC3000, and it cools down to around 85C at max. 89C with the original Cryorig fans.

And oh, I also removed the Heatsink and cleaned it from Dust and repasted it with the NT-H1 before testing again. 89C with original fans and 85C with Noctua's fans after repaste. And yes, I already removed all the plastics coverings I can see before using it.

Forgot to tell you that my Room Temperature sits around 28C while outside it is around 33C.

My own conclusions: Losing 300MHz still is too hot, since I'm pretty sure the TjMax for X5460 was 85.

How it's laid out? Simple, it's an air cooler. Apply a thermal paste and plug it in. Done. I'm pretty sure that's how it's laid out. Or if you mean anything else just tell me.

My specs are X5460 @3.8Ghz on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R with the Zotac GTX750Ti and 4x2GB Team Elite Plus DDR2-800MHz.

Sounds like you just have a bad chip. You should be way more concerned with your temps than what frequency you can get. Some chips just happen to max out pretty now (my 4690k only goes to 4.2ghz on air). Your Xeon happens to start at a fairly low frequency as well.

Judging from this terribly made video your OC results aren't that surprising:

I would still tone down to a lower voltage and shoot for 3.7 or 3.6ghz. Temps are the most important thing here.

I'll try to do that later. Mine currently sits at 1.31v where the default is 1.23v, so that's +0.8v

EDIT: Just managed to get down as low as 1.25v today with core clock still sitting at 3.9GHz. Will check out the temps later.
