Whole house ethernet

I will be moving in a few months and my new house has an unfinished basement.  Before I start on the refinish I want to run Ethernet to every room.  Can I get any thoughts on what to make sure I do, or don't do in this process?

Use a patch panel to terminate the wires into in the basement.

I would run CAT 6 to each of the rooms and have a network jack installed in each room.

 

The amount of ports is entirely up to you.

 

Then in your basement just have a switch they all run back to.

 

@mcraftax makes a great suggestion with terminating them to a patch panel, so then you can label each port with what room they connect to.

 

From there, I would connect those into a SOHO switch to cover the amount of ports you expect to connect up. I imagine a 16 port switch would be plenty.

 

I would then configure one port as a trunk to your router and connect it up that way.

 

Some of the lower end switches have a dedicated trunk port (sometimes referred to as an up link port) so no real configuration is necessary other than turning the thing on.

 

I would highly advise that you get a gigabit switch so you don't congest the LAN.

Install conduit with pull strings then you can always upgrade or add more as necessary.
