I have a Lenovo ThinkCentre M57p RB-6073-ATU, it has a core 2 duo  E6550 at 2.33GHz, I want to do some upgrade to it to make it usable - would it be possible to just replace the CPU with an i5 or will i have to replace the entire motherboard - if so how would i go around doing that?

You'd have to replace the entire motherboard since they use different sockets.

How difficult would that be? How much of the PC would i have to replace?

Basically you'd have to replace basically all of the pc unless the ram is ddr3. You could maybe replace the core 2 duo with a core 2 quad instead. But first and foremost what are you going to use the pc for? Light gaming or just browsing?

Ideally Id be using it for editing because right now im on an i3 laptop and second if i have an i5 i want to try converting it into a hackingtosh. Im just basing it around that pc because this would be my first build and i don't want to get overwhelmed.

Then just get a completely new build. Save up some money and see how much you are willing to spend on a pc.
