Should I delete Windows 10?

Go to solution Solved by AresKrieger,

Delete windows 10, partition windows 7 and a linux variant (I think mint is similar to windows in several ways), that way you can run windows only programs and have a more up to date OS when win 7 is no longer supported (essentially my plan if open source gets better due to windows 10 backlash)

    • No!

Reasons to delete Windows 10:

-It runs really slow on a dual core 1.7 GHz

-My hardware is so old there is no drivers for Windows 10

-Windows 10 spies on me

-It's taking up 125GB of space on my dual boot and wont let me shrink the partition even though it has 77GB of free space. (I only have a 240GB SSD!)

-No DirectX 12 improvements because Intel GMA 965 doesn't support it.

Reasons not to delete Windows 10:

-Windows 7 will eventually lose support, then I will have to BUY Windows 10

-Ummmmmm.......

If it runs slowly, definitely look elsewhere.  Linux is going to be your smallest bet and can work on almost all hardware out there.

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

The Xeon E3 1231 V3 IS BETTER Than the Core i5 4690K and a Significantly better value for the non-overclockers or value shoppers.

The OS is like a kind food, Try it before saying if you like it or don't.

That's what I plan to do actually if I delete Windows 10. My plan is to use the recovered space from the Windows 10 install to put Linux on. (And give Windows 7 more space)

Considering how it ran on my 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo T7600, probably. Despite what people say Windows 10 uses significantly more system resources than Windows 7. Honestly unless you have a DirectX 12 capable graphics card (like me) or a touch screen (like my lemon of a piledriver APU based laptop), then its pointless to even have Windows 10.

If Windows 7 runs better for you then I recomend downgrading

"If it ain't broke don't fix it"

wait it a moment... You say you have old hardware but have an SSD and 1.7ghz dual core, which I wouldn't consider old?

1.7GHz dual core, think of CPU from around 2006.

Except the updates are well known and you can delete them without worrying about windows update changing your settings so it comes back

Yeah..I never dealt with the 65nm Pentium. The only difference was 1MB L2 cache :P So yeah, stay away from Windows 10 on that computer. And if possible, upgrade to one of the later Core 2 Duo. A T7600 should work and be a very nice boost in performance (my laptop went from a Core Duo T2600 to a C2D T7600 around 4 months before it died-I needed 64bit support for Windows 7.

That's exactly what I did on my brother's laptop with its Pentium M770 (upgrade from Celeron M380) and Intel 915GML graphics. Ubuntu 16.04 (60GB partition) combined with Windows XP (100GB partition) means that for years to come it will still be useful as a spare laptop.

As far as it running poorly on your hardware...  Something is either wrong with the install of Windows or something is wrong with the hardware because if it runs Windows 7, it run Windows 10 just fine.  There are no differences.

Additionally Windows 10 DOES NOT in any way take up 125GB of storage space.  More like 10GB after all of the updates and everything.

If you don't have drivers, the Windows Vista, 7, and 8 drivers should (in theory) work.  You might have to manually install them versus automatically, but yea that's a thing.

Additionally, if you're not happy with Windows 10 then don't have it.  Also, don't use the term "Delete Windows 10" - it just sounds weird because you cant delete Windows 10, its not a file.  You can delete files within Windows 10, but not the whole OS.  You can "erase the drive and start over" or you can "install another OS"...  but, as far as "Delete Windows 10" it just sounds weird.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Its not because of the CPU, its because of drivers.  Try to finagle with the chipset drivers.

Its not because of the CPU, its because of drivers.  Try to finagle with the chipset drivers.

Nope, its the CPU. I did have Windows 10 running on a Core 2 Duo T7600 for a while, and the CPU was always under a heavy load. And that's a significantly faster CPU than the Pentium T2370.

1- It should be running the same or better from Windows 7. You are probably missing drivers. You can install Windows 7 or 8 drivers. I got a 2005 laptop up and running with a Core 2 Duo Mobile (first gen), and a GeForce Go 7400. (http://www.notebookreview.com/notebookreview/dell-xps-m1210-review-pics-specs/)

You won't be playing games however.

2- Windows 10 does not spy on you. I don't know who told you that, but that would be a lie.

3- You can shrink the partition as much as you want. You can't shrink it lower than 125GB because you have data there, and a huge empty gap in between. To fix this, you need to shrink it outside of Windows. They are software like GParter (free - just download the ISO, and burn to disk, and boot to it), which will move data as you shrink your disk.

Installing Linux to just switch continuously between Windows 7 to run 1 app, and have your stuff split is not good suggestion.

I would try to fix the above, if that really doesn't work, now I would go back to Windows 7.

I would not worry about buying Windows 10 later, as in any case you will with a new computer.

I 99% agree with Goodbytes here.  I'm more of a "just do what the manufacture told you" which means if they don't release drivers for Windows 10, then don't run Windows 10.  Although I understand the enthusiast wants to push their hardware as far as they can, even if its a potato.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

1. The only drivers supported are for windows vista (yuck) and they sometimes work with windows 7 but not with windows 10

2. It still uses precious cpu cycles I dont have

3. No I cant. It would not let we shrink it below 125GB even though it had over 75GB free.

4. I already deleted Windows 10 so..... I don't really care for Windows 10 on older devices (pre-2010), its always giving me problems.

What CPU's are compatible with my system?. (Gateway ML6731)
