http://www.evga.com/articles/01029/evga-17th-anniversary-sale/ EVGA is having a sale and I'm wondering if I should try and pick it up or wait for a 1080. I want to get more opinions and knowledge. I have a 1080p monitor but that will change to 1440p http://pcpartpicker.com/list/XKWmqk to my build. I removed the gpu but I have a 7870

Normally I'd recommend the 1080 hands down, but at that price? 980 Ti is not a slow card by any means, it being the flagship of Maxwell, so honestly it would depend on what you want to use it for. If VR isn't your cup of tea and you mainly game on 1440p or lower, I'd say the 980 Ti. But if VR is an interest of yours (or you want to run like two or more 4K displays) then shell out for the 1080. If it were me, for an extra two hundred bucks I'd have the very latest architecture from Nvidia and should be good for several years down the road. So I'd personally get the 1080 just to cover all your bases.

depends on whether or not you oc. 980 ti oc very well and at over 1500 mhz reaches 1080 speeds. the 1080 on the other hand (well pascal in general) doesnt look like it oc well. 1080 FE may be cherry picked, since they seem to be the only cards to reach 2100mhz (at least according to jayztwocents) he also tried an msi gaming x, a gigabyte gaming g1, and zotac amp! extreme, and none of those broke 2100mhz oc.

389$ for a 980ti classified is a damn fine deal if you ask me...i would rather get that than spend 659$ or so on a good GTX 1080...if you overclock the classified card you can easily get within 15% of the GTX 1080 overclocked...keeping in mind the 980ti is a good overclocker overall and will gain more performance through overclocking than the GTX 1080, closing the gap some...it's really not much faster when both cards have a good overclock...and the classified is a top notch overbuilt card from evga...should overclock very well and run cool and quiet...i have a 980ti and a 1440p monitor myself and it can drive any game on highest settings.
